Forgive me but this reminds me a bit of the vanity call sign system,
where brand new hams have someone else's number. Only vaguely so, but if
you had not said "it would be cool to be issued...", I might not have
bothered to respond here at all. Once a FISTS always one, but it is very
clear, and that is not based on who pays for Keynote, that we have
nowhere near that active a membership. A large number have dropped out
for good. It is, nevertheless, a huge organization, no denying that. Why
not just let the numbers keep climbing?? The other reason for answering:
Far better than trying to say FISTS has 10,000 members plus xxxx members
with numbers ending in A. Think about it.

but it took forever to send - thus,its advantages... I was still sending
when the pileup was over :-).. typical response from other end: "OJ?"
mine: "W2ZOJ 589 Syracuse NY ..". CONTACT!!!

I noticed that the fists's numbers are now past 9200 and it will not be
long before the 10,000 mark will be reached. Has any thought been given
to changing the number scheme when that level has been reached ? Perhaps
the numbers could be started over withh say, 1A for example and go up. I
t would be cool to be issued a fist number of say, 254A sometimes in the
future. I do think it would be nice to keep the fist numbers at a four
digit level. What do you think ? Perhaps the  majority dont care and
would be content to use 5 digits , I dont know . Perhaps we should have
a membership poll and if the majority wanted a new scheme, once we reach
10,000  we could have a contest to select the best idea ! Maybe I just
carried away :):) Just got issue 5&6, of my favorit publication !
