[FieldDay] Generators

Hi Mike,

First let me say that the automatic throttle could certainly become a problem
if the load is not constant. In real life, however anything but a switching
typr of power supply should put enough load on eapecially a small generator
to overcome the problem.

Next, you are going to need a light at night, so if you have a 60 watt or so
lamp for night use, leave it on during the day, which will add a constant
load regardless.

Since you are planning to buy a new generator, I would suggest you get as
large in output one that will not break your budget. There is always a use
for them if you have a power failure at the home QTH or decide to run more
than one station on field day. There is no end of other goodies you may have
on field day that will eat up additional watts. Don't forget about a clock a
box fan, and maybe even a small microwave. (don't laugh at that one) I have
frequently taken a small TV set along when I thought there might be TV
coverage and also to demondtrate the there was no TVI.

I have seen a small Honda unit advertised in "QST" recently that would fill
the bill niccely. It is available in 1 and 2 KW models and is 59db quiet!
The prices are not too bad, either. This month, the ad is on page 115 at the
left hand bottom of the page.

John, W4AWM
