Helio Greg,
Damn right. my name is Greg Kovacs--kb3ckd. For a while I have been
wondering why they dropped it. When you consider the basic premise of FD
and what used to happen as to what happens now, It certainly has changed.
I see HF as one means for communicating and practicing emergency
preparedness. I see the VHF/UHF as the other half to it. I think that we
tend to only use hf because alot of these OT's say that FD is an HF
event. I strongly disagree with them. I am our clubs FD chairperson. I do
alot of mental analysis of the propogation in FD. In my mind what is the
difference if 80M is only good for 2-300 miles in the day or if 2m and 6m
can do that and possibly more. I see 6m as the upcoming local band in the
next few years. One of the problems I see is that the june contest is 1
week before FD. That in itself can make someone not want to set up for
FD. But I think that the VHF/UHF bands are as practical if not more so.
When one considers that in most disaster or emcomm events it usually is
V/U bands that get utilizied. With the Technician class being the fastest
growing license class,I don't understand why they won't give them a real
spot in FD. I don't think that the GOTA station will be around for long
due to it's limitations. Since no station license can operate the GOTA
station more than for 1 event, It's history. The only thing I can see
all of us doing is to petition the League and allow the 100 point
station. This will encourage more clubs to put up V/U stations and
encourage their Technicians to participate in their license class as well
as HF. I would like to run all 4 bands for this FD. 6,2 1 1/4 m and 70
cm. When one considers that the Radio Shack discone antenna is a very
good fm antenna. It covers 50 -1300 mhz. That would take care of most of
your fm rig needs. A good log-periodic would be an excellent all band
antenna for weak signal. All you would
need is good switchers and power supply. Of course, Seperate antennas for
maximum signal is always desired. The only way we can get this type of
participation is to press the league and ask them to reinstate the 100
point bonus station. It is more desirable than a GOTA station to me.
Take Care and thanks for listening to my ramblings. I look forward to
replies to this.
Greg Kovacs--KB3CKD
