Hello Russ, found you guys on 80 meters during FD. Thanks for the contact.
Hope everyone on your end had a great time. I ran 1b portable this year and
made about 310 contacts. The rig was a Kenwood ts-130
moble rig and the antennas were a 80 meter delta loop for 80 and 20m and a
32 ft ground mounted vertcal for 40 and 15. Started FD with plans to use a
deep cycle battery for duration of test but battery failed 15 minutes into
FD. Switching to plan b required getting a portable generator going, running
to the gas station to get gas, and probably missed a good opening on the
higher bands. Finally did get on the air and except for having to gas up
every hour, things went pretty smoothly after that. The low bands were too
noisy in the evening due to local storms but a 15 meter opening to the west
coast made for an enjoyable change of pace. 40 and 80 cleared up around 0400
and many stations were put into the log over the remaining dark hours. All
told I worked a little over 200 CW contacts and around 90 or so Phone
contacts. I enjoyed this years event and look forward to next years Field
Day. Lessons learned this
year: #1 If you go battery power, test them before FD
weekend. #2. If you plan on buying a generator for portable operation, get
one with a BIG gas tank! Stopping every hour to gas up is for the birds. #3
If you have old gas cans with broken or cracked spouts, consider replacing
them. Broken or cracked spouts can create a messy situation and possibly
create a fire hazards. #4 Expect Murphy to come to your FD. He visited me
early! It's all part of the Field Day experience! Would like to know how
your FD went this year? Anyway, Hope to work you on the bands next June.
