It's really hard to run a wildly profitable ham radio supply business. Love of the hobby is probably the primary reason these places exist at all. 

There are so many ways to make a better living. 

As a young ham I thought I wanted to be an electronics engineer. After failing my first EE course I knew immediately it was not for me. 

I still very enjoy radio, computers, and electronics as a HOBBY. I'm proud to admit, however, my radio experiences and knowledge really helped me run my family's business when the cash register industry moved from mechanical to electronics and finally to computers and software.

Every year more than a dozen hams trek to high peaks along the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia to send an APRS packet from end to end. 

If you have an interest in being part of this event, let me know. I will be on site at my Frederick QTH between 10am and 2pm this Saturday.  There are 15 hops. The Maryland mountain site is number 7.  

Fortunately for me, no hiking. It's a drive up location. 

We had success in 2014. This year we are trying 9600 Baud as well.

I'm not certain if you still carry me or not on the membership rolls, nor am I aware of who to contact about this.  I moved to Maine about a year and a half ago, but at the time still had a large portion of 2 year membership dues paid.  I believe those dues may have transpired.  Although, I have continued to enjoy receiving and reading FARC e-mails.  Due to where I'm living (distance) I don't wish to continue with membership.

years TdF.  Included in the map are the rest stops, and a turn by turn
guide (cue sheet).

I exepct to have the communications Center up and running by 6am.  I do not
have the SAG vehicle times, nor di I have the rest site operational times.
I expect that we will have rolling support requirements all day long, with
most of the need being later in the morning and early afternoon.

I will work out a schedule of coverage and send it out to the list.

The Frederick Amateur Radio Club and Frederick ARES will again this year be
providing communications support for the Tour de Frederick on Saturday,
August 13th. This year, the Start and Finish is at the AOPA Hangar at the
Frederick Airport, and the individual races start at 0630, 0730, and 0900
(100, 60, and 30 mile), and all races will conclude by 1500.

 

The emphasis this year will be to have you ride shotgun in up to 9 SAG and
Sweep vehicles, rather than at the rest stops as we did last year. We will
be using the Thurmont 147.195+ (PL 179.9) repeater, with the MADXRA 147.060
machine as a backup. We will ask operators to provide their own 2M rigs with
a cigarette lighter plug and a quick mount (mag or clip-on, etc.) antenna.
The coverage on the Thurmont repeater is very good, so you'll probably only
need to use 1-5 watts to communicate, so a higher power HT w/outside antenna
should also work. Let me know if you really want to use your own vehicle,
and we also have a few mag-mount antennas to loan.

 

We'll do our best to keep the shifts reasonable so you don't have to operate
all day (unless you want to!). Please let me know the following:

.         When you're available

This thing will run for 24 hours on its internal battery.   I think I 
have a car power cord
but don't know where it is.  Will start looking for it tomorrow.

I just read that Hara Arena in Dayton has closed down. DARA has been working on a contingency plan for a couple of years and are moving towards a new location for Hamvention.
