After failing my first EE course I knew immediately it was not for me. I still very enjoy radio, computers, and electronics as a HOBBY. (this is a new starting location from last year) The rides will start early in the morning, and I will get firm times for the starts. The 100 miler runs into the mid-afternoon. Each of the 9 SAG vehicles ideally will have a HAM on board for communications back to net control. If we have the volunteers we can have a HAM at some or all of the rest stops. If you know any HAMs in the area that might be interested in volunteering please ask them if they can. All they need is a 2M HT, or portable, optional items: 12V adapter for your HT, a MAG mount antenna (I have some spares I can lend). We had a couple HAMs use their own vehicles last year too. You do not have to carry riders or bikes, just call in any issues you come across, and potentially get dispatched to trouble spots to get eyes on the situation, or search for lost riders. Message-ID: <008b01d1e87e$ff95dd70$fec19850$@comcast.net> The Frederick Amateur Radio Club and Frederick ARES will again this year be providing communications support for the Tour de Frederick on Saturday, August 13th. This year, the Start and Finish is at the AOPA Hangar at the Frederick Airport, and the individual races start at 0630, 0730, and 0900 (100, 60, and 30 mile), and all races will conclude by 1500. The emphasis this year will be to have you ride shotgun in up to 9 SAG and Sweep vehicles, rather than at the rest stops as we did last year. We will be using the Thurmont 147.195+ (PL 179.9) repeater, with the MADXRA 147.060 machine as a backup. We will ask operators to provide their own 2M rigs with a cigarette lighter plug and a quick mount (mag or clip-on, etc.) antenna. The coverage on the Thurmont repeater is very good, so you'll probably only need to use 1-5 watts to communicate, so a higher power HT w/outside antenna should also work. Let me know if you really want to use your own vehicle, and we also have a few mag-mount antennas to loan. We'll do our best to keep the shifts reasonable so you don't have to operate all day (unless you want to!). Please let me know the following: . Your name and call . Radio and antenna you'll be using . When you're available . Your cell number and email . Your T shirt size (FREE T SHIRTS!) . Your blood type (just kidding, hi, hi) As always, you don't have to be a member of FARC, ARES, or any other amateur group to participate, just a community minded ham wishing to help a worthy local cause, and all proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Frederick County.
