As the MADXRA 147.060 repeater is currently out of commission, we will be
using the FARC 146.640 repeater for the Monday night 7:30 PM nets until
further notice.

 

Also, please be advised that the ARES 10M Net held on the 2nd and 4th
Mondays of the month on 28.480 USB, is now moved to 8 PM (previously  8:15).

We have two public service events on the schedule this spring. The first is
the March of Dimes Walk, Sunday, April 26th, 0930-1200, at the Urbana
District Park. This requires a net control and 4-6 operators on 2M. We
should be able to handle this with HTs or mobile units on 146.580 simplex.

 

The biggie is the Hike Across Maryland, Saturday, May 2nd, 0530-2100, on the
AT from Pen Mar to Harpers Ferry. We'll need  operators at 10 checkpoints
for varying periods. Please see the times and locations below:

 

Pen Mar                                               0500-0630

High Rock                                            0515-0730

Raven Rock Rd.                                 0600-0830

Ensign Cowell Shelter                     0630-1200

Boonsboro Rd.                                  0845-1300

Washington Monument               0900-1530            

Lambs Knoll                                        1000-1630

Gathland                                             1130-1915

Weaverton                                         1345-2030

Harpers Ferry                                    1300-2100

 

For any checkpoint open more than 3-4 hrs., we'll break it into 2-3 shifts
depending on operator availability. Currently, Pen Mar and Harpers Ferry are
covered for ops.

 

As far as frequencies go, in the past we have used the Target linked system
(frequencies and locations below) with very good results. However, the K3MAD
147.060 repeater is currently out of commission and we're not sure it will
be back up by 5/2, but you should be able to hit one of the other Target

Talked to Mark this morning.  We both will be available for the March of 
Dimes walk.  I, however, will not be able to participate in the "Hike 
across Maryland due to an earlier commitment.  That is the day the 
Walkersville Southern RR has it's opening day for the season and I 
committed to be there.

Dear all, 
I have a 6 mtr, 2 mtr and 440 tri band vertical that isn't working right.? I replaced it yesterday with a? Diamond V2000A and then I took the failed antenna apart, really easy, one set screw and the whole antenna slides out of its probably 8-10 ft fiberglass radome. I think it was an MFJ but one piece antenna, not like the 2 piece one they have today. 
? 
I see no physical problems with the antenna proper but there are 2 small pc board with capacitors that act as some function in a couple of places of the stacked verticals. 
Possibly the capacitors are bad but if anyone wants the antenna its free. 
? 
I think you will find the physical wire part and all is ok, possibly capacitors? bad? Its been up for probably 10 years, heat and cold damage to capacitors? possible if that is the problem.

Hey there FARCers: Couple of quick questions. Even though I'm a General
class ham, I only have UHF / VHF equipment currently; plan on HF sometime
in the future. Looking at the MFJ window feed-through panels. I have three
different UHF / VHF antennas, so I'll just use three of the SO-230 plugs on
the outside with a short length of coax on the inside as a poor-man's
switchbox.

Question is, what about when I go HF? What type of connectors do HF
antennas have? I'm thinking about the MFJ panel that has 3 SO-239s, a
balanced line, a random wire, and a ground connector. I don't want to have
to buy another of these when I DO go on HF, but I also don't want to sink
too much cashola into something I won't ever use.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas? Help?

If anyone out there wants to give me some advice on entering the world of
HF inexpensively (but not using CW), I'm ... all ears.

Google Maps.  Looks like a couple of

All I found was a Sony AN-1 tunable shortwave antenna and a Radio Shack long wire shortwave antenna. That's it.

We still are in need of two or three hams to help along the March of Dimes
March for Babies route this Sunday, 4/26, 0930-1200, at Urbana District
Park. All you need is a 2M mobile or HT rig programmed for 146.580 simplex
and 146.640- (PL 156.7). We'll meet at the Start/Finish in the north end of
the park at 0930. ARES membership is not needed - just a desire to help a
fine charitable organization.

Jeff,

I would like to help with the HAM next Saturday.  The only two locations 
that might work for me are
a later shift at Gathland or an early shift at Weaverton.  The only 
radio I have is an HT so you will have
to tell me if you think I can hit a repeater from either of those locations.

Jeff:

I am available all morning and up until about 2pm to work wherever, and
whenever you need me for the Walk across MD event.  I will have a mobile in
my truck capable of cross band repeat, and a couple HTs.  So I plan on
being able to walk about wherever I am deployed.  If you need me to switch
locations at some point I can do that too so I can cover more then one
place during the morning.

If you can give me a heads up as to where you want to deploy me I will try
to scout out the area ahead of time later this week.

I just wanted to remind everyone that we will be having a net on the  
146.640 repeater Wednesday April 29 at 19:00. This is a regularly scheduled net  
that will take place every other Wednesday. This net is open to any and all 
hams  so check in and say hello. On a related note the 147.060 repeater is 
back up and  on the air. The weekly ARES net will be moving back to the .060 
repeater. Thanks  to Tim N3VNG for his hard work in maintaining this 
repeater.

Hi,
I just got a fun dongle device that connects to a Raspberry Pi and can
receive ADSB signals (1090 MHz.) It comes with a stock antenna and the
system is working, now I want to experiment with a few home brew antennas.

Is there a local store were I can buy a handful of various coax connectors?
The dongle has an MCX female antenna port. I ordered a UHF SO239 PL259
female to MCX male connector and a RF coaxial coax cable assembly BNC
female to MCX when I ordered the dongle, so I'm looking for the appropriate
matching/mating connectors for those to solder to my home brew antennas.

I'm going to start with a Coaxial Collinear Antenna made from RG6 in my
garage and a Collinear Wire Antenna from thick copper wire left over from
some electrical work. May also try a wine cork dipole or a ladder line
based J-Pole if I can find a short section of cheap TV ladder line.

Guessing the Radio Shack at 7th street no longer stocks these connectors
but would be happy to hear if they do or there's a good local parts store.

Hi Brian,

I was at 7th St yesterday.  They have plenty of SO239, PL259, B/TNC, SMA,
and F connectors.  No MCX that I could see.  For that, you could order an
MCX to SMA coupler, and a fist full or SMA connectors for cheap on EBay.
It will take a week or so, but you'll be out 5 or 6 bucks.

Brian,?At that frequency you need to be very careful about matching impedances, antenna lengths, measurements, etc.? Reduced emmissions due to RF losses are very high and greatly reduce your communication range.
RG-59 is 75 Ohm coax and you're transceiver is probably a 50Ohm device.? I suggest you use RG-8X coax, and don't cheap out on it.? 

Your wavelength is only about 9.8", so a half wave dipole is about 4.9".? You have to be very careful in when measuring and cutting.
UHF connectors are not made for that frequency and will greatly attenuate your signal.? I suggest you use either BNC or SMA.? "N" is of course the best, but they're too big for your application.
One of the easiest antennas to build is a Ground Plane.? I would use a "female chassis mount SMA".? Google it and you'll see what I mean.
If you go with a sleeve dipole, you will probably need to make a balun to isolate the RF from the coax.
Good luck with this project.? It should be more challenging than you think.

Oh yeah, I was there yesterday afternoon.  The parts drawers are all 60%
off, tools are 30-50% off.  Somewhat picked over, but lots of good stuff

I'm an inexperienced ham and the receive-only aspect of ADSB makes it a fun
project for me to cut my teeth on.

I tried making two antennas. The first, based on this Compact 6dBi
Collinear Antenna (http://martybugs.net/wireless/collinear.cgi) was a
failure despite calculating the lengths for 1090 Mhz. It got worse
reception than the tiny antenna included with the dongle. Maybe my copper
wire was too thick or it was due to not soldering the wire to the
connector, it wasn't a very tight fit.

The second, based on this Coaxial Collinear Antenna (http://www.balarad.net)
was a major success in my book, doubling the amount of packets I'm
receiving. For the second one, I made a choke (I think that's the word for
it) with three tight loops of coax just before it connects to the antenna.

Right now, I'm using RG-6 left over from a cable TV install but the runs
are very short, just a few feet. Probably some room for improvement, I may
try out Mt Airy Communications to get a short length of RG-8X and see if
that makes a better Coaxial Collinear Antenna.
