Message-ID: <00b001cfdeb2$d369b960$7a3d2c20$@comcast.net> ARES groups all across the MDC Section will be participating in the annual Simulated Emergency Test (SET) this Saturday, and here in Frederick County we'll be simulating the aftermath of severe thunderstorms. In theory, a strong cold front accompanied by severe thunderstorms with wind gusts over 50 mph and possible EF 1-2 tornadoes, has gone through Frederick County around 0200 Saturday morning. As dawn breaks on Saturday, folks around the county are waking up to power outages, downed trees and blocked roads, etc. Between 1000 and 1100, we will be taking damage reports from all radio amateurs around the county (ARES membership not required). NWS Skywarn Spotters are especially welcome. We would like you to report on "simulated" power outages, downed trees, blocked roads, and other damage caused by strong straight line winds or possible tornadoes. Net control will be N3RO, and we'll be using the 146.640 FARC repeater. Please begin each damage report with "This is a drill". Thanks - and have fun! 73, Jeff Fishman FRED ARES EC From n3kly at netscape.com Sun Oct 5 10:51:58 2014 From: n3kly at netscape.com (n3kly at netscape.com) Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2014 10:51:58 -0400 Subject: [FARC] Club 2m simplex contest Message-ID: <20141005075202.8BDADE66@dm0220.mta.everyone.net> Please note that 146.400 is the *input* of the Ashton 147.00 repeater! so, be carful on where you are when transmit on the above frequency. I have not had a chance to talk to the other participants but I personally had a great time even though I didn't find the foxes. I want to thank our president, Brian Rozelle (AB3RW), for organizing this event and making it happen. First prize went to Herb Palm (K3HCP) who found both foxes while the rest of us were wandering around in the park. Herb used his homemade tape measure-and-PVC pipe four element yagi with great success. Lou Popowsky (KB3RNT) brought two homemade directional antennas. He used one and let me use the other. I was able to get the general direction to the hidden foxes but also got a lot of misleading nulls that slowed me down and added an element of confusion. I now think these were caused by reflections from chain link fences and other structures in and around the park. Mel Schall (KB3ZVB) had a direction finding receiver that is used by the CAP to track beacons from downed aircraft. Not sure how well this worked. I noticed that Mel had changed to using his hand held with a rubber ducky antenna and a couple of 7DB pads. Mel also loaned two pads to me but even with 14DB of attenuation the signal from the fox was too strong to get a definite line to the fox. Jeff Fishman (KB3FIO) was also using the technique that he had mentioned at the last meeting. That is, using the hand-held antenna and using your body to block the signal. Don't know how close Jeff got to the fox. It was good to see two younger participants that I did not get a chance to meet. All in all, it was fun and I hope we can do it again. With what I learned from this experience, I will be better prepared for the next one. 73, Mark (AB3KS) From hcpalm14 at gmail.com Mon Oct 20 15:06:32 2014 From: hcpalm14 at gmail.com (Herb Palm) Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2014 14:06:32 -0500 Subject: [FARC] FARC Fox Hunt In-Reply-To: <54447138.8030400@comcast.net> References: <54447138.8030400@comcast.net> Message-ID: <54455D38.5070601@gmail.com> Thanks for describing what went on in Baker Park, Mark. Preliminary tests did show excellent "directive qualities" and the high front-to-back signal rejection guided me in the direction of the first FOX. Once I got close, the antenna picked up the beacon in virtually all directions. With all the metal objects, (cars, light poles, etc.) houses, and trees, it was no wonder the antenna was not very good in determining the direction of the FOX. A home made 6 dB attenuator did little to help. Then with a little trial & error I discovered "de-tuning the HT by as much as 5KHz and then 10KHz in either direction, the antenna did its directive qualities thing". That proved to be most useful. I relied on this discovery totally and found the second FOX without much difficulty. My only suggestion for future "Fox Hunts" would be to decrease the "no signal dead time" between beaconing. In over a minute of dead air time one can easily walk past the FOX without realizing it. Waiting to proceed forward before hearing the next beacon could take a lot of time and one could loose interest. As my first participation in this kind of event, these few words describe it well: IT WAS FUN! and challenging. Herb - K3HCP, Technician.
