This is Staff Sergeant Justin Brock, K2ZBM. I am a Senior Wideband Satellite Controller at the Wideband Satellite Operations Center at Fort Detrick and arranged for the tour for the Frederick ARC.
First, directions to get there. To get to the WSOC after passing through the Old Farm Gate to Fort Detrick take a right onto Doughten Drive. Take Doughten down to the motor pool (on the right) and take a left onto Porter Street. You'll take Porter past the gas station and fire station, through the light, past the commissary, barracks, and the health clinic/VA clinic. About a mile down Porter you'll come to the big satellite dish antennas. Our facility is the first building on the right inside the SATCOM compound. You can park in the parking lots on either side of the street. You can download a community map of Fort Detrick from http://www.detrick.army.mil/usag/communityMap.pdf
Please give yourself enough time to get through the checkpoint at the Old Farm Gate and reach the facility so we can begin at 1800. The security personnel at the gate will ask to see photo ID's for every passenger and will perform a search of your vehicles for obvious threats (weapons, explosives, etc).
I'll be waiting near the turnstile into the compound for everyone and can be reached at 917-620-0061 or on the 147.060 mhz repeater to talk anyone in if they get turned around somewhere.
As for restricting the tour to FARC members in good standing, you have to realize that this is a secure military satellite control facility. CPT Anderson, my commanding officer, is supportive of the local community and has agreed to host this tour. One of the controls in place for security for the tour is that you must be a member of the Frederick ARC. All members that are interested in attending must also submit their full name, SSN, and country of citizenship for my security manager. The information provided is used solely for the Visitor Access Request and to run a search in JPAS, a DOD system that is for security clearance records. Jim Ridgley, N3HTA, has been compiling the list for access. Please submit your info to him by next Monday, November 12th so I can relay it to my security manager, SFC Kimberlin, on Tuesday.
I have planned for an unclassified mission briefing followed by a tour of the facility. If a few minutes need to be set aside for club business, we can do that in the conference room before the briefing or after the tour.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. I'll help in any way that I can.
-Justin Brock

The box, with its implications of rigidity and squareness symbolizes unimaginitive thinking and painful frustration…
…sometimes we just have to step back and see if the solutions to our problems lies outside the box.
