- Jim Ridgley related a story from the Frederick News-Post column, 100
hundred years ago, April 5, 1912.
“For the first time, a wireless message was caught yesterday over the
receiving instruments kept at the Boys Department at the YMCA, it being
a dispatch sent from Washington to the steamer Apache which was located
somewhere in the Chesapeake Bay in the vicinity of Norfolk”.
Unfortunately the exact frequency was not given.
New Business:
-Field Day plans for June 23 & 24, 2012 are being made. As last year,
the expected place will be in the garage area of the Frederick Memorial
Hospital pending final approval by Phil Giuliano. In spite of
construction at the hospital, it should not interfere with this activity.
- Next month we will have Stu Brenner present a talk on “Station
Grounding”. June’s program will be by Jim Devilbliss on “RACES”.
Committee Reports:
- SKYWARN: Ben Nardi - W3ZUP attended the basic “Skywarn “ class and is
now a spotter for the system. The ensuing conversations regarding
Skywarn were of interest to all attendees.
-ARES: This years event is called “March for Babies”, annual walk in
Baker Park, Frederick, MD. A sign-up sheet for volunteers was passed
around. HT radios will be the only radios required. The frequency will
be 146.580 MHz. simplex, starting at 9:00 am. Meet at about 8:30 am at
the big tent near the band stand.
On April 3, 2012, Jeff Fishman - KB3FIO and Bill Reinhardt - N3CTR
participated in an exercise with the Prince George Health Coalition
Hospital Group Drill from FMH and Jim Devilbliss was at the EOC to make
voice contact through the Central Maryland Repeater Group to a number of
different repeaters on 440 MHz, one here and various in PG County
consisting of about 5 repeaters. The exercise lasted about an hour and
talked to several different stations. This was also linked through
Winlink. This is a quarterly exercise.
- MISC.: Lou Popowsky received an e-mail from Bob Maroney concerning
club equipment still at his place, ranging from radios, power supplies,
and various other items. His request was to return it to the club. This
equipment may eventually be made available to club members or be sold at
HAM fests.
Another item discussed was the Incorporation papers of our club, as to
being current and in effect. A concerted effort will be made to gather
needed information to determine our status.
