Subject: MDC Section-wide Winlink test today

Copied below is an email that was sent to all ARRL ARES(R) Emergency Coordinators for distribution to their volunteers. The idea is to get folks to use the local RMS Packet nodes to send ASEC Mike Liller, N7NMS, an email over radio. This lets him know what nodes are working and puts some activity on the nodes. These local packet nodes are provided by county Emergency Operations Centers and private amateur radio operators making a network of alternative ways to send email over our radios. This infrastructure is a critical part of our emergency preparedness for the MDC Section. While Winlink can be used on your desktop or laptop computer directly through your internet provider, the purpose of the test is to use it with your computer/radio/TNC on RF.
Remember that TNC you used years ago to connect to a packet BBS?. Dig it out and participate You can download the FREE Winlink2000 software
at: <http://www.winlink.org> and cruise the site for everything you need to know to get started. You can also locate a local node and frequency near you. You don't have to be a member of an ARES team to participate.

This months Section-wide Winlink test is today, July 12. Winlink operators will have 24 hours to send me (n7nms at winlink.org) an email VIA RF ONLY. Telnet and web connections do nothing to test the system.

Please do not use telnet/web unless you are reporting a problem with a gateway station you cannot access.

Please include the following info:
1) Call
2) Name
3) Type of station: Private, EOC, or other types
4) County
5) Winlink gateway and any digis or nodes used to access the system
6) Any issues or problems you had connecting to the system

EOC's and stations with RMS Relay capability are requested to simulate an Internet feature and forward some traffic via Pactor III to test their HF equipment as well. Stations With HF and soundcard capability are also encouraged to use Winmor to connect to the System. ALL operators are encouraged to participate in the test, so everyone dust off those TNC's and HF rigs, get involved and have fun!
