Hi Leonard, KB3ONM Kirk here. Equipment you need for D-RATS RF
is a computer running D-RATS, a D-Star radio, and a data cable
for connecting the radio to the computer. If your computer doesn't
have a serial port you will also need a USB/Serial adapter.
As for the data cable you need, this will be determined by the
model of D-Star radio you have. For example, the Icom ID-880H
radio uses the Icom OPC 1529R data cable which you can purchase
from any Ham radio store such as HRO, Universal Radio, et. al..
You can also make a data cable yourself if you wish as Rolan has
done for his Icom IC-2200H and Rolan can assist you with this.
You can download the latest release (beta version) of D-RATS
0.3.3b5 at http://www.d-rats.com/download/beta/ For Windows
the file you need is d-rats-0.3.3b5-installer.exe and this will
download and install D-RATS for you. Either Rolan or I can
help you with configuration. Download takes less than 5
minutes depending on your Internet connection of course.
Documentation for D-RATS can be found at
http://d-rats.com/
Those of us whom use D-RATS our recommendation for new users
would be to try D-RATS out via the Internet first before jumping
right into the RF side of it. This will let you get a feel for D-RATS, what
it
does, how it works, and to determine if D-RATS is definitely something
you want to do.

All,
I replaced the packet at the FARG site with a D-RATS system yesterday, still
on 145.75.
D-RATS is a digi program written for DSTAR and you can use the <file>
function to connect to W3FDK-9 and upload and download files. Example, to
leave
a message for some one, make a file using notebook, preferably, and you can
call the file something such as w4ccc from w3xxx and they can then
download
the file and read it. These are open files so anyone can download any file.
You can send messages using any of the several message forms in D-RATS to
anyone within simplex range.
There is message forwarding using one of the several message forms in D-RATS
so if you know someone is monitoring you can send the a message via w3fdk-9
if they are out of simplex range.
This is experimental and the D-RATS <file> function was not intended
for this use but I wanted to try it and have a system for DSTAR users to
play with D-RATS, the digi part of DSTAR
and it runs about the same speed as packet.
I have notified the writer of D-RATS what we are doing and he may be
interested in expanding his program to be more like packet.
Please let me know if you have any questions, this is all new to us but
myself or Kirk, KB3ONM will try and help.
Take care,
73 de rolan w3fdk
