Hi Brian,
I strongly recommend the SMA to BNC adapter. That way there is a wide variety of antennas both for on and off the radio. If you ever get to Hagerstown, Allegheny electronics on north Potomac has them at a much cheaper price than HRO or others.
I don't recall what the brand and model is of the antenna on my HT but it is BNC and definitely works better than the standard whip. The only inconvenience is its foot long length.
For mobile, I use the Comet M-24 mag mount. It covers 2m/440 and seems to receive well on out of band signals. The cost is around $40 from HRO.
