[FARC] icom mic audio

All,

I have always been getting low audio reports from my IC2720H and my IC2200H. My voice has a tendency to trail off anyway and Phil told be about some ICcom mic problems and below is a nice web site that addresses the problem.

http://www.hamradio.cc/forum/index.php?S=58f15f3a65818b4d205f682a5c721385&t=msg&th=110

To start with I DID NOT replace the resistor, please read on.

I took my mic apart again, the mic on the IC 2720, and looked through the mic hole from the back and it was almost completely covered up by the plastic membrane inside the front of the mic, the holes in the mic and the white membrane didn't line up. I also found how to set the mic level from lo to hi on the IC 2720H base radio.

On the IC 2720H, to set the mic level from lo to hi , turn the radio off, then hold down the SET button(with the picture of the key beneath it) and then push the power on button for 1 second.

A menu will come up, push the SET button until leL L or leL H comes up. If it is H leave it , if it is leL L then rotate the left hand frequency know until it reads H then push the 'power on' button momentarily and it will resume normal operation and then check the inside of the mic as below to see if the air port from the outside of the mic is being blocked by the white membrane inside the mic, after after you get the mic apart.

I went to the IC2200H manual and there is no mic gain setting via software but when I brought that mic in this morning and took it apart the opening in the membrane in the front of the mic was completely off from the opening in the front of the mic. It is a small opening anyway.

On both mics I cut away the white membrane inside the mic so the membrane and the mic opening on both mics now have NO obstruction looking from the inside of the mic.

After I did the above I got excellent audio reports ( well considering my voice not really 'excellent') from Phil on both the mobile and base station and the audio levels were the same as far as Phil could determine and much louder than previous and that was with the mic about 3-4 inches away and talking across the mic.

If anyone needs any help with the above let me know and I will be glad to help you.
