Skywarn Trained Participants
I am putting together a list of Skywarn trained persons in Frederick
County (MD). Some months ago during a Skywarn Net, I was asked by Sterling
Weather for conditions in a very specific part of Frederick County. There were
no spotters checked into the net from that area at the time. One of our
net participants remembered we had a member who lived in the area and
telephoned him. The information needed by Sterling Weather was obtained and
quickly transmitted to them. This certainly pointed out the need in having a
list of where our Skywarn members live and where they work.
We have been in contact with Frederick County (MD) Division of Emergency
Management to establish a contact to notify them of severe and immediately
dangerous weather we may spot. They indicated a desire/need to have a list
of persons who are trained in weather observation (Skywarn) that they could
call for specific information concerning weather conditions within
Frederick County. They asked for a contact person with a list of trained
volunteer weather observers for urgent weather related issues involving their
emergency management duties. The County office will not have access to the
list; but a Net Control Operator will have the ability to contact a trained
observer in the area and have that person contact the Emergency Management
Office. We feel this is the best way to maintain security of the persons on
the list and the phone contacts. Sterling Weather cannot provide a list of
trained observers for security reasons.
I am willing to maintain a list of Skywarn trained persons. The four
trained Skywarn Net Control Operators (Jim N3HTA, Jeff KB3FIO, Jackie WB3KDS
and Rick K3RO) will have access to the list; but no one else. The names
and numbers will be provided to the County only for urgent information
reasons. We ask all Skywarn trained operators voluntarily provide a phone
number for home and place of employment (Frederick County only). Please send
the information including your Skywarn ID # to me via e-mail or telephone.
Again this is a voluntary action and the list will be maintained by me and
shared only with the 3 other Skywarn Net Operators. I will accept Skywarn
trained NON-hams as well for the list. There is no requirement for persons
participating in Skywarn to be hams… reports are accepted via telephone at
Sterling.
If you have any questions, please call me.
