If you would like to work as a communicator in any Red Cross operated shelter during a disaster, the Red Cross now requires all ARES radio operators to take an on-line orientation and undergo a basic background check (paid for by the Red Cross). If you are not already registered as an ARES/RACES communicator, please go to the FARC web site (frederickarc.org) and click on the ARES/RACES box on the left and follow the instructions on how to register. In the meantime, you're welcome to take the ARC orientation and complete the background check information. Below are the instructions sent to me by the head of Chapter Operations for the ARC Frederick Chapter:
Good afternoon Jeff,
I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I had promised to send you the information concerning on-line orientations and background checks for the ARES members who wished to be listed as Red Cross volunteers.
Here would be the process.
1. Complete the on-line Red Cross orientation and on-line Introduction to Disaster Services. This will provide a clearer understanding of Red Cross disaster response and how their role with ARES may interact with the Red Cross.
2. Both those orientations can be found at http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.d8aaecf214c576bf971e4cfe43181aa0/?vgnextoid=7bf51a53f1c37110VgnVCM1000003481a10aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default
3. Complete the background check at www.mybackgroundcheck.com . On this page click on the Red Cross button.
4. After they have completed the background check e-mail me at jpeterson at frederickredcross.org. Put ARES in the subject line and their name and e-mail in the e-mail message. That way I will know to process the background check and add them to our list of approved volunteers.
Thanks!
