[FARC] Ham Radio for 7 year olds

Hi, Joe,

I'd suggest that for 7 year olds that the emphasis be almost completely on
what you can *do* with radio. Kids that age, as you know, are interested in
actions. In addition to the items you mentioned, you might add that they can
communicate with satellites (perhaps show Satscape on a laptop?) or even
talk with an astronaut. Ask them if their siblings use IM at home and then
explain that there's an equivalent that doesn't even need the Internet or
telephones to work. Mention some specific kids listed in QST who have become
hams. This past week, I saw a 10 year old General on PSK31. He said he got
his ticket at 9, and would go for his Extra this summer. I think there have
been a number of 7 year old technicians. It's definitely within their grasp
with a parent's help.

I like your visuals. Great ideas! Too bad no one around here apparently has
a fox/hound combination. I bet they'd love that.

What time is your presentation? I get out of work (Tysons) at 2:30 PM. I
don't know if I can hit that repeater, but I can try.

73,

I'm going to be talking to a group of 7 year old cub scouts tomorrow night
about ham radio.

I put together an outline of what I'm going to say/do. I figure there will
be a lot of improvising to keep it on a 7 year old level but also keep their
interest for 15 minutes.

Can anyone from this area reach the Anne Arundle Radio Club north county
repeater on 147.075 T107.2? That is the repeater I should be able to reach
from inside the school.

Thanks & 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R
