Congrats Dave from KB3ONM Kirk.  My recommendations for a new starter HF rig 
are the ICOM-706 MK II G, Yaesu FT-897D, and if money is an object the ICOM 
718.   I have the Yaesu FT-897D and the ICOM 718 so I can tell you these are 
nice beginner rigs.  The word on the street is that the ICOM 706 MK II G is 
also a very fine rig.   I started out with the Kenwood TS-2000 as my first 
rig and the learning curve is very high, I still don't know how to make best 
use of all the features yet and for my skill level a lot of it is overkill. 
Your results may vary.
