I am sure that at sometime it might disappear, but not in my lifetime.
50,000 in the US is a lot, but worldwide the numbers are growing. What is
interesting is that as a percentage of population, ham radio has increased
greatly from 50 years ago. Anyway, I talk to foreign stations more often.
What is interesting is the recent fact that the military has just figured
out that vacuum tube radios will survive nuclear attacks and morse code is
still a reliable means of communication under difficult conditions. The
bicycle is making a come back with the high cost of gas. There was even a
story where some woman traded in her truck for a horse -- seems that hay is
cheaper than gas.
Let's what else has NOT disappeared.
Television did not eliminate radio
Power boats did not eliminate sailboats
The car did not eliminate the horse
Photography did not eliminate painting
Hip Hop did not eliminate classical music
The internet has not eliminated the newspaper
Electronic books have not eliminated paperback books
Laptops have not eliminated desktop computers
The microwave has not eliminated the oven
The motorcycle has not eliminated the bicycle.
The credit/debit card has not eliminated cash.'
The dollar coin did not replace the paper dollar.
The car did not eliminate the train
The plane did not eliminate the train
The jet plane did eliminate propeller driven planes.
The rocket replaced nothing - it simply made the world a more dangerous
place.
Satellite TV has not eliminated cable.
Wireless phones have not eliminated cordless phones.
Grocery stores and overnight transportation did not eliminate backyard
vegetable gardens, hunting for food, nor fishing.
But surely some things have changed.
The CD replaced vinyl records
DVD's replaced video tapes
Refrigeration replaced the ice box
And on and on.
Yes, my hobby is changing a lot. More computers and software defined
radios. I am finally buying a modern radio -- I have to wait 5 months for
it. It simply does more for less $$$ and eights 8 pounds instead of 50.
I heard a comment awhile ago that an ardent iPod user was explaining that
someday with improvements in technology Podcasts will be available in real
time. The listener simply said, "Like radio?"
Leaving for Israel on Friday. Hope all is well. Thanks for sending the
article. I'll have to see what else is disappearing.
