Subject: Simulated Emergency Test
Emcomm Community,
A belated but sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the Simulated
Emergency Test (SET) on Oct. 6. We had an excellent turnout with nearly 20
check-ins, including the EOC, Red Cross and the FARC club station. Special
thanks go to Eric N8AAY for assisting with net control at the Red Cross,
Joe NE3R for manning the FARC station, Jim WA3FUJ at the EOC, Kirk KB3ONM
for digital backup and Tim N3VNG for help with the MADXRA repeater. We were
on the air with VHF voice and digital and HF through the MD Emergency Phone
Net.
I think everyone got some good experience with what could happen in a
weather emergency, and hope we all had some realistic practice simulating
the damage reports. It was reassuring that so many stations were prepared
and able to operate on emergency/battery power. A weather emergency would be
the most likely scenario for an ARES activation in this area, and being able
to take care of your family and home while reporting on your local "ground
truth" weather conditions is very important to the NWS and local
authorities.
If you have not already taken them, I strongly encourage everyone to take
the FEMA ICS 100 and 700 courses online or at an upcoming class in the
county one Saturday this winter (TBA). Taking them online is EASY as you
download the final exam and then figure out the answers as you take the
course at your leisure. It takes only about 1-1 1/2 hours for each of the
two courses. NWS Skywarn training is also good to have.
Again, thanks for a job well done!
