Forgive me for using the reflector again:
Thanks Bob. Glad to help with the vicarious experience!
Lester and I did meet up on Friday. Quite lucky to do so: I was working in
what basically amounted to a shielded box (like a Faraday Cage) and I
initially missed Lester's call and email due to no cellular signal inside the
box.
I drove up the beach road where I recalled meeting up with Lester around 4
years ago, and surprised myself by recognising the hotel, out of around 20-30
similar hotels along that particular beach!
I dropped in to the hotel. Everyone knows Lester. The manager advised me that
his car was gone, "but he's never gone for long..."> The buddipole was there
on a tripod, on the beach, next to the thatched rotunda. Saw what looked like
a feeder for a dipole too, dangling out the sky...
Just as I was about to give up tracking him down and head to another of my
telecom sites around 100km away, Lester emailed me again, and let me know
where he was: Sitting having dinner, watching the sunset from a perfect spot
at a bar/restaurant that I frequent quite often too. So I reversed direction
and managed to spend a great couple of hours chatting to Lester and the other
locals, and running back to the car from time to time to see if my mobile APRS
setup was successfully being digipeated by the ISS.
I have custody of the local club callsign, so I put 6Y5RA (a combined APRS
station and digipeater at my apartment) and 6Y5RA-1 on the map from time to
time via the ISS.
Unfortunately, Findu doesn't archive the maps for long, but you might see me
travelling around Jamaica. http://map.findu.com/6Y5RA*
