Kirk,

Ah ha, the $64,000 question, how to use packet now its there. I think like 
Bob said, its used during emergency drills,  thats what I want to start 
doing and before cell phones and  the internet there was an enormous amout 
of traffic passed on packet.

It was really neat because you could send a message to someone in Calif and 
most of the NODES were programmed to figure out how to  get  the message to 
Calif by transferring from packet NODE to packe NODE.  The nodes are sort of 
packet stations whose prime function is to relay messages to bulletin board 
packets. I think  that is generally correct. As you get more  familiar with 
it you can  actually connect to quite a few stations at the same time but it 
gets kind  of sticky because say, if you connect  to a node in Va , then you 
tell that node to connect to node in NC then  you tell that node to connect 
to another node in GA then if you  send a message it has to be repeated back 
can forth and verified at  each  stage  and can take a while depending on if 
each node  is busy or not. This is kind of discouraged.

I will  send you some nodes you can connect to via w3fdk-9 or any of  the 
others you come across.

When you connect to a node or digipeater(w3fdk-9) then type mh and it will 
send you a list of the stations it has heard and you can then repeat through 
say,  w3fdk-9, to another node and then send  mh and see  what nodes it has 
heard  and  on and on.

Kind of  interesting.  Then   send a   disc and they will  all drop like 
dominos HI.
Anyway, I believe its a nice mode to learn.
