[FADCA] Fpacnode (E. Central Florida Report)

I can't read any of this crap - it was bad enough with the 'bottom posting'
requiring someone with way too much time on their hands to read the same
thing over and over looking for something new - but this inbetween the lines
'response' crap is for 300 baud 1987 fidonet threads.

Someone give me a break -- this is 2007 -- some of us get over 200 +++
emails a day -- if you can't say what you want to say in the first 2
sentences -- it doesn't get said it gets deleted as spam.

And if it takes more than 2 - the first 2 should at least say enough to get
the rest read -- I would estimate 99.9% of email from 'fadca' goes right
into the bit bucket - (not that it makes any difference to anybody if I read
it or not, I know) -- but if you are going to talk about stuff that is
supposed to be thought about or discussed -- leave in an organized (reverse)
order so it is readable -- if I am so senile I can't understand what you
are referring to, I'll look underneath your post and read it to remind
myself.

This one is totally illegible. I have no idea who is saying what to whom or
for what reason, and I don't have time to sort it out -- if it is a private
affair, make it one.

THAT'S why no one takes part in discussions -- you can't read or follow the
damn things - and FADCA is the ONLY email thread/reflector in the world that
is twisted up like this.

Ray, and the rest of the Group,

Not really as Bud stated he was really the only one that took enough
*interest* to reply.

> of which I had no interest in interfering.....

This should be a topic that warrant comment from anyone who feels ROSE
protocol is the way to build a community Network for HAM radio in Florida.

I noticed a lot of my questions are still left unanswered.

I have a lot of respect for what Bud has to say even though I may not
agree with him. If Bud didn't he would not have replied.

> My only question Jerry is you spoke of other than Linux but you never
> said what.

Ray, this is the type of question we should be asking our self I believe
our community has been mislead with ROSE for a very long time.

> What is so much better than LINUX just curious?

Linux is really the base system for our backbone which is a really good
start. As stated before Linux has native support for ALL HAM radio
protocols that in use today except Flex.

I never stated that there is better software then Linux. I wouldn't even
consider using anything but Linux for commutations. I am a Microsoft
Certified System Engineer who works with Windows server everyday and I
know for fact that Dos and Windows is a poor choice for commutations.

When I started playing with Fpac my goal was to see how I could integrate
Fpac into the Amprnet.

Which I have done...

But like everything there are pro and cons.

I also on the same node install other software like Xnet to see how it would
integrate. What I noticed is that Xnet seem to be more stable more robust
and took little time to setup and supported TCPIP. It was also ported to
other platforms such as windows and there even a version that will run on a
Linksys home router. Imagine a 56 megabit TCP/IP-ax25 router this has a lot
of possibly.

When an Fpac node is setup on the Amprnet there is no way to connect to it
using it's IP or it's HOST name. I assume that telnet was taken out because
of FBB. So what this mean is a user could not login from the Amprnet to the
node but they could make outing connection to the Amprnet.

There some people that will tell you ROSE is the fastest thing on the
planet. This is crap... TCPIP and ax25 are both faster and easier to
route on RF and the Internet. Other wise more people would be using it.

Each new update of Fpac seems to have serious bug and require a lot of
time tweaking and trouble shooting new problems. I think most of us who
have Fpac nodes have seen this time and time again.

Each new update of Xnet is rock solid and seems to be well test before
it's release to the public.

It's getting harder and harder to find good software for HAM radio that
is still being maintained. That one of the reason I have been careful with
the packages I been testing with.

UROnode would be a good alternative to Fpac and would have most of the same
same feature. It would even support WL2K since Fpac and UROnode are really
newer version of LinuxNode. Xnet would seem to complement such a system with
a more robust ax25 type routing system that is much simpler then x.121 DNIC
routing system we are currently using.

Currently there are already such system in use in Florida and can be used
as good example of how to build a more robust and reliable service for our
community.

I started with a open mind and tried using various software but with the
help of Hams with much better skill set then my own took the time to show
me what work and why.

Do the same and you will also see ROSE is a very poor choice.

If it were a good choice why aren't more people using it?

Best regards, Jerry DeLong, KD4YAL
