Just wanted to share some things I was able to do using the slow speed data
link on Dstar today.
I recently got my 2nd Dstar rig, and have been playing around linking the 2
together.
Tonight I did an experiment. I set up a linux box with it's serial port
attached to my ID-800. On the linux box, I put in:
T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100
to the /etc/inittab file. (Debian Sarge distro).
I configured the ID800 to auto xmit on data (it defaults to using the PTT
key to transmit). I also configured the ID800 to run at 9600 BPS on it's
serial interface.
Then I plugged in my HT (IC91AD) to a laptop, and drove away in the car a
few blocks down the street. I then fired up hyperterminal and configured it
with the following parameters:
Baud 38400
Data 8
Parity none
Stop bits 1
Flow Control xon/xoff
Then, File -Properties -Settings -Emulation vt100 -Ascii Setup -Send line
ends with line feeds -Echo typed characters locally -Append line feeds to
incoming line ends.
I tuned the HT to the frequency my ID800 at home was listening on, then I
made sure the HT was set to xmit on data. I hit the enter key a few times on
the keyboard, and was greeted with my home linux machine's logon screen!
I was then able to log in (using a test account, passwords are not
encrypted) and fully use my bash shell. I could check email, run a few
commands, telnet into the DXcluster, even reboot the home machine remotely.
I was only playing with the default shell, but my home machine could have
easily been running a BBS, or a DXCluster mirror.
Very cool stuff.
