This is a big reason for getting all of these switches moved to Linux, it has
the power to handle voice streams.
Speaking of D-Star, there was also a piece about P-25, which is the sort
of 'open source' digital mode that is being promoted in the public safety
arena. Most of the radio manufacturers are starting to support it, and in-
deed I was sort of hoping instead of re-inventing the wheel (D-Star) we
would see P-25 picked up by the amateur community. It is digital it does
both voice and data and is broken into 12.5 or 6.25Khz channels, with
the 6.25Khz channels being a single voice channel, you agregate for
data and it also has trunking. Proper combination and you end up with
a nice efficient digital system that can allow for voice, data, and images
since in the end it is all data.
