Subject: Telpac Gateway
Hello Bud,
Thanks to you, my understanding of WL2K has grown to the extent that we
are now ready to establish a Telpac Gateway at the Highlands County EOC in
Sebring, FL. We have a few questions before we bring the gateway up:
1. Do you have a recommended frequency for our location here in central
Florida? Contacts with FADCA did not result in a frequency assignment.
Since current Florida Telpac Gateways are nonexistent in the mid 145 mhz
range, would 145.570 (or nearby) appear to be a good choice for us? There
is a local packet net on 144.970 so we wanted to stay clear of that
frequency. Any thoughts or suggestions about choosing a frequency would be
welcome.
2. May we have permission to use the N0IA Telnet server? During our
testing, this server has been totally reliable.
3. Do non-WL2K stations cause any problems if they connect to the Telpac
station?
Thanks,
Fred Seely AA4ME

Hi, Fred - Glad you are moving things along there in your area.
1. I don't see an existing 2M LAN in your part of the state, but we need to
get some others on the fadca at mailman.qth.net who are closer to the ground
truth than I am to respond before I make a recommendation for a LAN
frequency there. Normally, there is an FPAC switch that supplies a 2M LAN
frequency for access to the network.
In the absence of such - I recommend trying to work an arrangement with the
144.970 'packet net' folks as that must be where anyone who is on packet is!
This would, hopefully, provide more packet folks an introduction/access to
the WL2K system rather than just going off on a frequency where no one else
is.
2. Freel free to use the N0IA Telnet server for your Telpac Node. . . I
suggest using two out of state PMBOs as your #2 and #3.
3. If a keyboarder connects to the Telpac node it just responds like a BBS.
The keyboarder needs to know the keybaord commands for using the Telpac
node- which can be learned by using the H(elp) command. Telpac supports
keyboard connects, but it is terribly slow that way! Best that users have
Paclink AGW or Airmail (fully automatic links) or at least have the message
in a file and upload/send the file once the inital TO: is set up.
If you need any help in setting up terminal programs (Winpack) to make that
semi-automatic let me know.
