Yes they are all at least a+rx or 755 (I am used to the second one)

This I did, funny on my machine which has been working just fine from
get go, I did not have the shell set, but I did have it set to be the shell
in the passwd file and also in the .bash_profile

I have been looking to see what else I can find out on this. I wonder if there
is some logging somewhere that will tell me something?
