Subject: [FADCA] IP Addressing for switches
Folks,
Presently we are using bogus IP addresses for the switch ports, this is OK
in order to get the initial network up and running, but if we want to really
get things going we need to plan on setting up the IP part and make it all
talk at that level also. As we start linking switches using 802.11 gear and
other high speed RF (and the wired links where we must) we need to look
at our 44 assignments and start using them. I recall that Brian and Bruce
when they worked over the IP address assignments for the state tried to
more or less map blocks of class C addresses to area codes, but I am
not sure if that is still followed or has been abandoned. The idea was to
make it much easier to map between X.121 and IP addresses. That
would make the translation of addresses a bit easier.
I would figure that each major switch should have a class C address
block in order to be able to hand out DHCP assignments to users as
they come on and drop off of the network. Perhaps in some areas we
will see a block of addresses across a large area due to low population
demands.
All of this needs to be thought about as we look forward into growing
and adding applications to the network.

Can you get with Bruce and Brian and find out? I had a 44. address but it
is long been lost in past computers.
