DIGITAL MODES TECHNICAL CONFERENCE

Saturday August 20, 2005 8AM until 5 PM

Tampa, Florida

The TPALAN amateur radio club will host the second Florida Amateur
Digital Communication Association (FADCA) technical conference to be
held this year.

A free full-day conference on packet, other digital modes, digital
networking in Florida and ARES E-mail Over Ham Radio in Support of
EMCOMMs will be held at the Hillsborough County EOC in Tampa. Anyone
interested in learning about or promoting amateur radio digital
communications is welcomed to attend.  Check the agenda below for
details of topics to be covered.

The conference, in the form of hands-on workshops, will be quite
informal, though time-structured in order to keep discussions moving
and allow ample time for all agenda items.  To keep on schedule, lunch
will be on site ­-  a choice of sandwiches, sodas, water, etc.  The
$6/person fee will also include morning Krispy Kream donuts and
coffee.  Because of needing a head count for lunch, as well as CD ROMs
and handouts, PLEASE advise well in advance of your attendance (See
RSVP instructions after the agenda.)

Attendees will be coming from all over the state. To take advantage of
a full day, the conference will be divided into two hands-on
workshops:

(1) For those wanting to learn about E-mail Over Ham Radio and how to
use the Florida Layered Packet Network.

(2) For network site managers who want to get started on LINX FPAC.

The first workshop will start at 0800 and the second after lunch, but
no later than 1300 hrs.  The conference will end no later than 1700
hrs. While these are related, but very divergent workshops, all
attendees are welcomed to take part in either or both.

This is your chance to learn more details about the exciting new
facets (and some old ones!) of packet radio and digital messaging.

Driving Directions From Interstate 275:
Traveling Interstate 275 from either a Northbound or Southbound
direction, take Exit 47(A) [old Exit 30(A) ] Hillsborough Avenue / US
Highway 92 East. Travel East on Hillsborough Avenue / US Highway 92
East for approximately 1.7 miles until you come to the traffic signal
at the intersection of Hillsborough Avenue and 30th Street. Turn left
(North) onto 30th Street.  Travel North on 30th Street approximately
0.5 miles until you come to the traffic signal at 30th Street and
Hanna Avenue. Turn left (West) onto Hanna Avenue. The EOC is on your
left approximately 0.1 miles from the intersection of Hanna Avenue and
30th Street. The EOC building is located behind the Hillsborough
County Fire-Rescue building at the base of the 320-foot radio tower.

30th Street. Turn right (North) onto 30th Street.  Travel North on
30th Street approximately 0.5 miles until you come to the traffic
signal at 30th Street and Hanna Avenue. Turn left (West) onto Hanna

0800 - LUNCH  - PACKET NETWORKING IN FLORIDA AND HANDS ON WORKSHOP ­

So you want to get (back) on packet? So your ARES group wants to
incorporate E-mail Over Ham Radio?  Here is your chance for some
real-time help. Basics of the Florida Layered Packet Network and the
WL2K E-mail Over Ham Radio systems will be presented, then we will
load the software required to use them on your laptop.  There will be
plenty of help.  Take advantage of this opportunity.  If you don't
have a Win95/ 98/ 2000/ XP laptop to bring, come and observe so you
will see how to do this on your computer at home or at your EOC.

NOTE: Win2000 or WinXP OS is required for full automatic E-mail over
Ham Radio. Win95/98 may be used for packet messaging and less
automatic E-mail.

THE FLORIDA LAYERED PACKET NETWORK AND HOW TO NAVIGATE IT.
Local Area Networks (LANS) ­ The Building Blocks of the Network; switch
components; how a switch functions; network addressing; connect
scripts; Telnet links, packet Bulletin Boards, Telpac Nodes.

E-MAIL OVER HAM RADIO IN SUPPORT OF EMCOMMS IN FLORIDA.  What is
required to provide this service in Florida.

GETTING YOUR PACKET STATION RUNNING (All software will be supplied.)

1. Loading the following programs on your Win2000 or WinXP computer:

a) MS Dot Net Framework 1.1 (Do it yourself before you leave home if
possible. Just do a Google search "download net framework" and use
Windows Update. Do not go beyond 1.1!)

b) AGW PE free

c) AGW terminal

d) AGW digi

e) Paclink Post Office

f) Paclink AGW

2. On this computer or a Win95/98 computer

g) Winpack Terminal Program

h) Airmail 3.0.22

i) Telpac Node

3. Making the TNC LEDS blink using c,e,f, g, and h above.

If you also bring a (working) TNC and an RS-232 cable for the TNC to
your computer, you will go home with all this working.  (Bring power
supply for the TNC.)  If you do not have a TNC there will be one for
you to use during the workshop as a proof of principle. Do not bring
your vhf radio unless you have a TNC-to-radio cable already wired for
that. Bring a dummy load if you bring the radio.  MODERATORS: N0IA,
N3PPC, and anyone else who is available to help.

If necessary, this workshop will continue after lunch concurrently
with the LINUX FPAC workshop.

LUNCH BREAK ­ Two choices of sandwiches, potato chips, cookie, pickle
spear, and a soft drink - $6/person. (Morning Krispy Cream donuts and
coffee included.)

1300  LINUX FPAC ­ Network site managers will learn how to prepare a
LINUX computer for FPAC.  Bring one or more LINUX-capable computers
with one or more serial ports and a CD-ROM drive, or just sit in, observe, 
and take notes.

The exercise is planned to set up ax.25, define a port and test that
port.  From there one can play with packet (as a USER) and attempt to
install FPAC/TELPAC.  This is a hands-on exercise, with a 'Live CD'
install (i.e. OS on RAM drive and programs are pulled off the CD into
RAM) or a hard drive install.  We should be able to complete the
exercise on a laptop and accommodate those who want to install to the
hard drive on a desktop. If your computer already has Linux installed,
the needed ax.25 packages will be supplied. MODERATORS- K4GBB and
