Bill,
This was the same sort of thing that Phil Karn painted back at a
Dayton Packet meeting several years ago, only Phil works for Qualcom
and has a insiders view from the other side and it is even more scary
they are VERY aware of our spectrum and in the background are doing
all they can to try to get their hands on it. The biggest activities
are the gathering of usage and also how well we have attempted to
keep up with technology. Put a spectrum analyzer on almost any band
and it looks pretty empty except for certain used freqs. HF of course
is more trafficked due to the international aspect, but our VHF and
UHF bands are really pretty dead, and above UHF is really dead, worse
yet that is the spectrum they really want.

Then if you look at what they see when they see activity they see
30 and 40 year old technology still being used and defended to the
death, even our dear packet is still 1k2 and a bit of 9k6, the first
being now almost 30 years old and the second not far behind, so indeed
they are slowly building a case for our expulsion, and I fear that
unless we do something to pick up the pace sooner or later that will
happen.
