Your description of the damage to the antenna fits that of the damage
typical to antennas which have the active element isolated from DC
ground. I remember when I lived in Costa Rica where we had very bad
lightning that we would have antennas struck by lightning, the ringos
and other DC grounded antennas would have some discharge damage at the
point where the discharge hit the antenna but a total loss was rare.
But the antennas that were not at DC ground would be left with just
a stump sticking out of the mount (if it was left at all) in Florida
it is a must to avoid such antennas.
