I suggest we look at the current infastructure and find compatable
protocols, and create a steering group for the group to focus on newer
technologies and experimenting with higher speed links. For example can we
run 19.2 Kb links reliable enough over 30 to 50 mile links. Can we modify
existing equipment to obtain faster speeds without full duplex.
Our usefulness to served agencies depends on several things but here are a
few:
Knowing our limitations (current operating ability, If we had to do it
right now)
Demostrating our abilities(if they don't know what we can do they will
not use us)
Finding new ways to communicate(using new technologies)
Pushing our groups forward(Public safty Comms is changing and moving
forward. Are we?)
Creating focused steering groups with real goals to make us a viable
alternative to Nextel!(Hi Hi)
There are a bunch more, but these are a few i am tossing out. I would like
feed back on these.
I remeber a few years ago the Europeans we running 10 Mb/s links on UHF.
Where did the eperimentation go in the US? TAPR group has not turned out
much over the last 4 to 6 years. We need more hams to push the envelope and
experiment, and not rely on someone else's guess. I have been doing packet
since the early 90s, and i have seen the decline not only in packet but ham
radio in general. Have we as hams lost our ability to be in the forfront of
technology????
