Joel....
The technology has been eclipsed! Yes, BBS technology was great in the day,
before there was a commercial Internet and general public acceptance and use
of same. But nothing ever stays the same. And, sure enough, the Internet
arrived, complete with SMTP Mail and all kinds of other stuff. The world
hungry for another way to communicate embraced it.
Maybe the question you should be asking is "If the BBS was so good, "WHY
have most of the Amateur Radio operators abandoned it for SMTP messaging
over the Internet?". The answer, at least to me, is pretty obvious.
Amateur Radio never made BBSes as simple, flexible and easy to use as SMTP
mail. What's more, at 1200 baud or slower, it has been left in a cloud of
dust.
The days of Amateur Radio leading the charge on personal messaging are long
gone. It is the rest of the world that has left Amateur Radio messaging
methodology and technology in the dust. And, if you can't beat 'em, do the
next best thing. Take stock of the resources Amateur Radio has in its goody
bag (like the spectrum above 900 MHz). Start using those frequencies and
technology to move information at something faster than a snail's pace. And
push out to the Ham community a messaging tool that can compete favorable
with an Outlook Express or Mozilla. Or, if you can't, use those software
tools to communicate.
BTW....while Amateur Radio continues to lament the good ole days and trudge
along at 1200 baud, the commercial world is busy pushing out protocols like
QAM64 on 700 MHz and 800 MHz with throughput starting at 190 kbps on a 25
KHz channel.
