Subject: [FADCA] Demo of Layered Packet Network at OFRC Meeting
Deltona
Monday Oct 7 1800EST
This morning, Charlie, N3PPC, and I gave a program/demo of the E. Central
Florida portion of the Florida Layered Packet Network at the Old Fart's
Radio Club Meeting at Stone Island. The OFARTS (a.k.a Indian Mound Amateur
Radio Society) is a co-sponsor of the network Deland FPAC switch.
The antenna at Stone Island (on the North shore of Lake Monroe just east of
I-4) is about 30 ft agl and deeply buried in vegetation!. (Sommothose trees
with Spanish Moss are 60 ft above the antenna!) Using 35w on 2M LANs we
could get to the Orlando LAN (145.07) and the W. Volusia LAN (DeLand 144.91)
with impunity. We actually could use the Daytona Beach LAN (145.05) , but
the path was not all that solid.
(Applause for N3PPC, N4WKQ, and N0IA for those three switches!)
For those of you who are behind, go to
http://www.fcrosby.com/fadca/index.html
and click on the 2nd box in the left frame "Map of Florida Layered Packet
Network"
We demonstrated links throughout Orange, Seminole, and Volusia counties, and
to WX4J NTS BBS in Switzerland, FL about half way between St. Augustine and
Jacksonville. (Russ, N4KOX, assures us that the St. Augustine to Orange Park
link will be solid by November so we will be able to get to JAX from here
24/7 then.)
A representative from the City of DeBarry and two of her ham supporters were
in attendance. After the meeting they requested a similar program/demo to
be made to the City Manager and City Council of DeBarry. FL so they will
understand how Amateur Radio can support their HomeLand Security measures.
There is little doubt that the City of DeBarry EOC will be on the network
before the end of the year. That will be five EOCs in E. Central Florida
that will be on the network.
This past weekend two of the OFARTS members dusted off their packet stations
and got on the network! Today three others indicated they wanted to try!
Let's keep the ball rolling.
Can you make such a presentation at a club meeting soon? If you need some
help, send me an e-mail.
