Evans, Bud and Chuck can provide you more (my experience has been with ROSE
switches more than FPAC switches), but here is a quick way to try using the
FPAC and ROSE switches as well as NetRom type NODES and BBSs of several
varieties (most common now are F6FBB BBSs:
If you see, for instance, W4PLB-9 try this connect statement:
C HEARD via W4PLB-9,407275
or
C HEARD via W4PLB-9,407277
Either of them should send back a list of stations heard on the port 407275
or 407277 if the switch heard you. I will say that your TNC will decode
packets much easier and at lower signal levels than are required for actual
"connected communication" as when you are just "monitoring" your TNC is in
"unproto". When you issue a connect request your TNC expects a "error freee"
connection. You may be able to "connect" to some stations and not be able to
send a receive "error free" packets and may get disconnected due to excess
retries.
You can also try connecting to W4PLB-8 with:
C W4PLB-8
If you do connect you will get a connect greeting that will provide some
additional infomation that should guide you on how to access the features of
the switch. The -8 SSID denotes the "node" call of the FPAC switch and
provides some "node" type functions.
For the connection to be "error free" it requires that all of the packet
frames be decoded without errors and if they are not, then the connection
will be dropped by either your TNC or that of the station to which you are
connected.
However, KE4INI, depending on what KE4INI device you are seeing, according
to the FADCA database, is either a BBS or a Node. If you are seeing the BBS,
try this:
C KE4INI and you should get back a signon statement from the BBS.
If you are seeing the KE4INI Node try:
C KE4INI and you will receive back, if you are able to connect, a "node"
greeting.
in either case sending a "?" once you are connected should elicit a "help"
file that will give you the commands that the device, bbs or node, will
respond to with valid data.
If you see an SSID, a -# after the call, i.e. KE4INI-7, add it to the
connect statement above.
I hope this helps.
