Deltona, FL EOC
April 1, 2002
This morning The Indian Mound Amateur Radio Society (IMARS) is demonstratin=
g the ways in which Amateur "Ham" radio operators can assist the City when =
there is an incident that overloads the City's radio- and wire-based commun=
ications capabilities.
The demonstration includes 2 meter (vhf) voice communications from the Delt=
ona Emergency Communications Center (EOC) to the Volusia County EOC and to =
EOCs in near-by counties. Voice communications from the Deltona EOC to and=
among hams in support of tactical operations are enhanced by use of existi=
ng Amateur Radio repeaters strategically located throughout the area. Cove=
rage includes base and mobile stations, shelters, hospitals, and served age=
ncies.
Using high frequency (HF) voice we are able to communicate to any place in =
the state of Florida (and beyond), including the State EOC in Tallahassee. =
From the Deltona EOC this morning at 0700 EST I checked in to the Florida =
Phone Net on 75 meters and received "traffic quality" signal reports from K=
ey West, Jacksonville, Pensacola, and all points in between.
This morning's demonstration included Amateur Radio digital modes. Between=
and among EOCs, shelters, and tactical sites communications of large infor=
mation/data/message files may be effected through the Amateur Radio vhf/uhf=
digital network. This network is accessible throughout Orange, Seminole, =
and Volusia Counties, and extends through to Jacksonville. With the additio=
n of a network switch in Melbourne this summer, the network will stretch so=
uthward along the east coast to Hollywood. This network ties to the Florid=
a west coast=20network from Stewart.
In support of the Last Mile concept, we can send large message files to dis=
tant locations outside the Last Mile where internet connections are still i=
ntact. During our demonstration this message was sent under computer contr=
ol from the Deltona EOC on the 20 meter ham=20band to a network station in Dal=
las, TX. From there it was automatically placed on the internet to arrive =
in your e-mail in-box within a few minutes. The system is fully automatic -=
the only ham radio operator involved "live" was here at this station in th=
e EOC.
The Indian Mound Amateur Radio Society appreciates the opportunity to serve=
the community. We also appreciate the use of the Volunteer Fire House at =
Stone Island to use for our weekly meetings.
Respectfully yours, and
73,
