Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone out there has had a similar or same problem on a
Watkins Johnson 8618 series receiver as I outline below:
The reference generator entire 10.7MHz segment is dead...nothing. It's a
bunch of 2N2222 transistors, a few other bits and a couple of 10.7 MHz
crystals. All check ok in the old-fashioned ohmmeter way of measuring. The
10.7MHz feeds the 535MHz synthesizer, so I figured I should be able to
inject an externally generated 10.7MHz signal into the connector for the
now-dead 10.7MHz and see the 535MHz synthesizer react...nothing...schematic
shows another 2N2222 transistor, which I went after for a checkout...that's
when I figured I'd best check with the body-of-knowledge out there.
The 535MHz synthesizer is a peculiar double-sided assembly, easily removed
and reconnected outside the confines of the chassis, however, the small
circuit cards are pretty well trapped inside behind power lugs, RF incoming
coaxes, etc. If it is the proper procedure to massively disassemble the
module, I can do that...I just hate to do it an find out later that all you
do is pull pin A from hole B, etc etc....
Anyone done any surgery on the 10.7 MHz ref gen and/or the 535 MHz
synthesizer? I have the full manual with appendices.
The good news is, the entire receiver works beautifully except with this
problem it's off by 14MHz and drifting +/- 100KHz. Presumably, a fix on the
535/10.7 issue will render a properly working unit.
thanks in advance to any responders.
