Subject: [ETS/PARC List] Raspberry Pi power

We've had some intermittent problems with Asterisk shutting down at our
K2ETS remote site, and I've discovered something important. The Raspberry Pi
MINUMUM operating voltage is 4.8v. The USB cable you use to power it is
CRITICAL. To check,  I used a USB cable which I cut and stripped, and
measured across the red and black conductors. I plugged this into a USB port
on the Pi. I checked 4 cables on a Pi running with one URI connected, and
got 4 DIFFERENT Pi voltages. The lowest reading was 4.5 volts on 2 cables!
One read 4.7 volts. Finally, the fourth one read 4.92 volts. These cables
are not rated for current, so you must check them!

Len and fellow list members - 

First, Len, thanks so much to you and the team for all the repair and maintenance work on the repeaters, and for keeping us so well informed.

Couple of comments on your Pi USB power observations?

I?ve found exactly the same thing: Power is key to the proper operation of the Pi.  And USB power supplies can be less than reliable (both the power source and the cable).

First comment is that the Pi often shows misleading symptoms when there?s a power problem.  The symptoms you were seeing are typical, where part of the Pi works and part doesn?t.  You were able to boot the OS, but not Asterisk, for example.  I suspect, without real proof, that this is because the various chips have different requirements and tolerances for voltage and current.  That explains why, if power isn?t accurate, some of them work and some of them don?t. Since most of the chips are fully-contained systems, if that one chip works, then a whole portion of the system works.  Same is true for add-on boards. I had a case where the power wasn?t correct, and the same sort of thing happened - the Pi passed power-on-self-test and booted, but the software wouldn?t run properly.

Second comment, for any fellow Pi (or other USB-powered-board) fans, is that it?s worth the time and possibly money to get a USB power adaptor and cable that?s high quality and has more than enough current capacity.  Usually there are a few models either sold with the device or listed as compatible.  Your average phone charger isn?t powerful enough.  I learned that the hard way.  Also, these power supplies don?t always just fail to zero.  Sometimes they start declining.  So one day your Pi stops working, but some of the lights are on and it?s a situation where the voltage just dipped below the operating threshold.  

USB is an interesting story all round - a classic case of something designed for use cases A and B, and ending up covering use cases A through Z.  In theory, USB-C is better and more consistent.

Subject: [ETS/PARC List] Repeaters are back!

Rich and I returned to the at 4pm and the repeaters are back.

 

The Pi is powered from a new power supply and usb cable. Pi voltage is 4.98
volts, very good.

 

We connected all the cables, and fired it up. Much to our dismay, we got the
same errors, and nothing worked! This after the EXACT same setup was working
fine on my bench. Hmmm.OK.the problem must be site related. When I tried a '
service asterisk start ', the error message read: A DEPENDANCY FOR
ASTERISK.SERVICE FAILED. SEE JOURNAL.CTL - XN FOR DETAILS. I got my laptop
out to connect to the Pi and save this error file. I needed an ETHERNET
cable to the laptop, and found one hanging behind the rack..wait a
minute.there is NO ETHERNET cable in the Pi! The yellow cable in the rack
had a broken RJ45 tab, so I took one from my laptop case and connected the
router to the Pi. The Pi was again re-booted, and holy-smokes.everything was
working. It seems that due the tab missing on the original cable, it had
slipped out of the Pi without us noticing. The error message did NOT
indicate a missing network, and I am surprised that it would not boot
correctly just because the network was missing, but that appears to be what
it was. Reading the error file yesterday also did not indicate the real
problem.

 

OH-WELL..it is back, running on a much better power source.

It's official! The older Debian 8 dial version will NOT start asterisk
without an Ethernet connection! I sent the following to app_rpt users
digest...

 

After experiencing a recent problem at our site, I've done some
experimentation. We are currently running Debian8 ( DIAL ), or ' RAT_C1 ',
from 2017. I started with 2 blank 4Gig SD cards, and installed each version.
If this system is booted on ' Rat_C1' WITHOUT Ethernet, Asterisk will NOT
start, and there is NO URI connection. Plugging in the Ethernet cable starts
Asterisk, and a good URI connection is established. After that, the Ethernet
can be removed, and Asterisk will continue to run. The current Debian 9 (
ASL ) does not exhibit this property. I will be changing over to ASL ASAP!

HORRIBLE!

frequently have HORRIBLE audio. You do NOT stress anywhere in your
instructions that users check their audio quality and levels. Please correct
this. I have paid careful attention to the audio fidelity on our system,

Fellow club members, family and guests,

I want to thank Dan, KC2YRC for keeping everyone up to date regarding the club's annual picnic this coming Sunday.  It is important that we have an accurate head count for the food and refreshments.  I know that in the past a few members sometimes wait until a day or so before the picnic, pending the weather report, to confirm their attendance.  Well I am happy to say that this Sunday the humidity will be low and the temperature is reported to be in the mid-70s.  Just perfect for a picnic and getting together with fellow member and their families.  

Dave, Dan and myself welcome anyone who wants to show up early to help with moving / setting up the tables, doing some minor cleanup if necessary, and setting up the rigs and antennas.  Maybe you have a portable antenna you would like to setup and try out in the park.  Looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday.

Fellow club members,

I just spoke to the Scotch Plains Recreation Department and we are all clear for the picnic on Sunday.  Doesn't hurt to call and have all the bases covered.  I also  inquired about the bathrooms.  The bathrooms that are on a timer system they will be available to us  in the morning.  See you all on Sunday.

     Here are resources for monitoring or or participating in various hurricane nets.  These organizations run emergency nets.  Operators should NOT check in to ask about weather conditions, forecasts or damage reports.  Operators also should NOT transmit to provide forecast information that is online, on The Weather Channel, etc.  If you are not in an affected area, you can play a valuable role by monitoring and, if necessary, relaying information between a weak-signal station and the Net Control Station or to another relay station.  All Nets have pre-selected Net Control Operators, but relay stations are a valuable asset, especially those who, like those on this list, are close to the coast.

     If you have the Scanner Radio app on your smartphone or tablet (you can also access it on the Broadcastify website), some of these Nets are sometimes simulcast via Scanner Radio.

     It is too early to determine if Dorian will affect our area directly or indirectly.  For now, I would encourage all operators to monitor one or more of these Nets to become familiar with Net protocols and to serve as a relay station, if needed.
