Subject: Some Important Announcements

Happy 4th of July weekend.

A couple of announcements of interest to the Division.

First I?d like to announce the retirement of long time ENY Section
Manager Peter Cecere N2YJZ.  Pete has decided to step down after 16
years of service as SM.  I will sorely miss Pete in that role.  He has
been of immeasurable help to me in my position and, of course, a solid
rock as SM.

Perhaps even more important is the friendship that we?ve developed
over the years.  I know that as I write this in steamy New York City,
he?s enjoying himself on the beaches of North Carolina.  I?m
jealous!

I?ve nominated John Fritze K2QY to succeed Pete as ENY Section
Manager.  You all know John.  He?s the long time ARES District
Emergency Coordinator for the ENY Northern District.  He is the RACES
Radio Officer for Albany County.  He is also an ARRL Assistant Director
for the Hudson Division, President of the Albany County Amateur
Communication Service, and he is a past President and current Board
member of the Albany ARA.

I know that John will do a great job as Section Manager and is the
logical choice to fill Pete?s shoes.

When Les Kalmus W2LK left the Hudson Valley for Florida, the land of
thousands of HOAs, he created a vacancy on the DX Advisory Committee.  I
am pleased to announce that Steve Hass N2AJ as the new member of the
DXAC representing the Hudson Division.

Steve is a well established DXer and holds the following awards: DXCC
(SSB, CW, DIGITAL, MIXED, 9BDXCC) and the CQDX Award.   He has worked
345 countries Mixed and Phone, 322 CW and 304 Digital.

It never ceases to amaze me at how Steve is so very well known and
respected in the international DX community.  He currently serves as the
Hudson Division Assistant Director for International Relations and has
hosted numerous foreign hams as they travel through New York.  I have
had the pleasure of meeting a number of our visitors as Steve always
sets up a get together with his international friends and the local DX
community.

Steve has also operated from many countries.  I know he will be a
tremendous asset to the DXAC.

This Saturday July 8th we will switch out the main 94 repeater with the unit
that Len has built. All who would like to help meet at the Watchung Police
department at 840 Somerset St, 07069 between 9:30-10:00 am.

Follow signs for ' North 531, Watchung ' off Rt. 22. ( check Google Earth
for details )

The Watchung PD is about 1/2 mile north of 22, on the right.

Have a radio on '94 so we know yer coming!

All work should be completed by 12:00 PM.

Please send a confirmation e-mail to both of us so we know how many to
expect.

PS: It will be helpful if as many members as possible have a radio on
Saturday so we can get some signal checks.

The new Motorola repeater is on the air.



The old repeater output was 26 watts into the antenna.

The new repeater output is 42 watts into the antenna.



There IS some receive de-sense affecting received signals. We ARE aware of
this,

and will do some tuning later this week. For now, some signals be weaker
than they should be.



The new receiver is VERY sensitive, and with the increased output power we
will need

to go over the duplexer tuning. I am confident we can eliminate the de-sense

Subject: [ETS/PARC List] ETSNJ Motorola Repeater is better than ever!

    We ( Len, WB2HKK, and Rich, KB2LLM ) went to the site today to
investigate the receive problem.



There will be a detailed presentation at the next meeting.



There were 4 separate areas that became the solution:



1] The receive preamp added TOO much receive gain! I had tuned the Maxtrac
for about 1.5uV sensitivity itself.

    The preamp resulted in about .08uV sensitivity. This just caused
excessive de-sense from the transmitter.



2] The BNC cable I had used for the receiver to duplexer connection was a
piece of CR*P!

    I had fabricated a BNC to N cable from RG1428 Teflon cable to replace it
 and it was perfect!



3] The duplexer connections to the transmitter were re-routed to move them
away from any receive cables.



4] I touched up the duplexer for better transmit reject on the receive side.



When done, we could turn the transmitter on / off with NO change in receive
signal.



The result is we have HANDHELD coverage almost everywhere!

WE HAVE HAD OUR PROBLEMS WITH CABLES IN THE PAST.
SOME TIMES YOU DO NOT REALIZE HOW CRITICAL THEY ARE IN A REPEATER SYSTEM.ALSO IF YOU HAVE GOOD PROPERLY MADE CABLES THEIR LOCATION IN RESPECT TO OTHERS SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERECE.IF IT DOES YOU MUST SUSPECT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH ONE OR MORE.

It is with deep sorrow that a giant amongst us has gone on to a better
place. Henry Long the father of Hank Long, N2MU, recently passed, and his
obituary is included below. Please extend your condolences to Hank for his
tremendous loss.

 

Drew Moore

 

Henry Long WWII veteran, successful developer and builder who worked to
better the community Henry Long, 93, of Watchung, N.J., passed away on
Saturday, July 8, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Plainfield,
N.J., he resided in North Plainfield, N.J., before moving to Watchung. He
served on the North Plainfield Planning Board and was inducted into the
Plainfield Hall of Fame, along with Milt Campbell, whom he hired and
mentored as a teenager seeking summer employment. Visitation will be held on
Thursday, July 13, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752
Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Funeral services will begin on Friday, July 14, at
10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service at St. Mary's
Stony Hill Cemetery, Plainfield Avenue, Watchung. To send condolences go to

served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 15th Air Force, in World War II, as his
father did in World War I. He was a man of peace who fought against tyranny.
Henry set the Air Force flying record by completing 50 combat missions in 65
days. He volunteered and was selected by Major Ascani to fly in the lead
plane on a Top Secret Classified Mission into Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia
to support the Slovak National Uprising. His crew landed behind enemy lines
to bring supplies and rescue flyers and leaders of the uprising. This heroic
act earned him a Distinguished Flying Cross, many years after the mission
was declassified, as well as honorary citizenship by the President of
Slovakia. Henry was a successful developer and builder, who believed in
social justice. He always considered how his projects would better the
community, whether it be affordable homes, apartment buildings, professional
buildings, or commercial properties like Somerset Square in North
Plainfield. He often finalized a building project with a handshake, as he
did with his friend of 65 years, Max Rosenbach. Henry loved horseracing and
owned racehorses. He also enjoyed the laughs and camaraderie with old
neighborhood friends at the local coffee shop each morning. He is survived
by his wife of 70 years, Louise (Grausso) Long; a daughter, Marlene Long of
Watchung, and a son, Henry Michael Long, of Warren. Donations may be made in

Subject: Amateur Radio Parity Act makes it to the Senate

Good morning Hudson Division. The Amateur Radio Parity Act was
reintroduced into the US Senate yesterday as S. 1534.  It was referred
to the Commerce Committee which is the committee of jurisdiction.

The bill is the companion bill to H.R. 555 which passed the House of
Representatives in January.

We still have a lot of work to do. After I get back from Washington,
which is where I'm writing to you from, I will be putting the final
touches on a new email campaign for the membership to participate in.

Subject: Special Event Station at Brookhaven National Labs

The Brookhaven National Laboratory Amateur Radio Club is hosting a
special event to celebrate the Lab's 70th Anniversary. It is also the
100th Anniversary of Camp Upton Army camp, the property on which BNL
resides. The BNLARC will operate beginning this Sunday, July 16, 2017
and continue through Saturday, July 22, 2017.  A schedule of operating
times and frequencies will be listed on their Special QRZ page at

on this page. A link will be provided on this page for all contacts to

  Hello

    Just was informed that the Friday night tech net now has a start time
at 8pm PST which translates to 11pm EDT.This is rather late.

    Question....Does the membership want a very late tech net or not?The
East Coast Reflector has their tech net on Tuesday nights & runs two hours&
starts at 8pm.Which one does everyone want?

   This net is hosted by Dick WB2JPW.Hes the founder of the ECR

    The concern is this is rather a long net.The repeater would be not
available for the two hours that the tech net is aired.Comments welcome

I read the official discussion below yesterday from the App_Rpt Allstar
e-mail

I thought you all might enjoy reading it. This is why there is another
version on Allstar by Doug Cromptom,

and his website HamVoip.com. 

In my opinion, Doug has made learning the Allstar system MUCH harder,
because new users do

not understand the conflicting information that is online when you search
for answers. He makes it appear that his 

software is official, and never makes the disclaimer that his is a secondary
option.



This was on the App_Rpt user discussion yesterday. Apparently, Doug ( WA3DSP
) did not like the direction

that Allstar was headed, and was constantly fighting over decisions. As a
result, he claims Jim Dixon said if

he didn't like it, then go in his own direction. Doug is in violation of the
asterisk license, because he will NOT publish

his source code, a requirement of the use of Asterisk.

  So this "discussion" has go on for about a week. Face it, other then

Venting, and somewhat preaching to the choir, nothing has been

Accomplished.  Other then AllStarLink  (ASL) abiding by the license for

Asterisk, we have no standing. It's up to Asterisk to enforce it's

License. I am as much a advocate of open source and HAM radio as

Anybody, but it's time to end this. Do I disagree with David's and

Doug's (HAMVIOP) decision to not open the source to their version of

Asterisk? YES. Is there anything we can do about it? NO. David says he

That he is following Jim's wishes. What I have been told by David is

That Jim told him if he did not like what Jim was doing, fork it. So he

Did. That's just fine with us. We moved the source code from SVN to GIT

To allow ANYONE to submit changes to the code. David submitted one bug

I see that the HamVoip distribution 1.5 has telemetry ducking.  This

Feature set was designed by me and implemented by a friend into a

If HamVoip doesn't make their entire source code available, I will be

Informing Digium of this violation.  While Digium no longer supports the

App_rpt application, they certainly do the Asterisk Project.  If the

HamVoip folks haven't signed an agreement, then shame on them.  Just

Because Digium is no longer supporting this application doesn't mean

They don't still own it.  It's still under Digium's control, and using

Any part of Asterisk obligates them to follow the terms of Open Source:

 

If HamVoip had their own commercial license, they would be making people

Sign an agreement for its use.  I'm not aware of any such requirement.

 

If Digium doesn't enforce the terms of Open Source, I'll be heading up a

The Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club will feature a presentation on the upcoming solar eclipse and the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigative (HamSCI) project .

Dr. Nathaniel Frissell (W2NAF) will speak about the upcoming 21 August solar eclipse and the help amateurs can provide in obtaining propagation data by being on the air that day.

Frissell is a post doctoral research associate at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (NJIT-CSTR). He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in Spring 2016 at the SuperDARN HF radar laboratory at Virginia Tech.

The presentation will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 starting at 7:00 PM at the Fair Lawn Senior Center, 11-05 Gardiner Road in Fair Lawn, NJ. The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

I'd like to create a coverage map for the ETSNJ repeater.



I will need data from all of you. As you use the repeater, note where you
are when you begin to lose coverage ( town, road, area ).

Also note what equipment you are using. I'm most interested in Mobile
coverage using a normal 25-50 watts and external antenna.



Eventually, I'll have many points in all directions.



Larry, W2LJ, reported coverage in Poughkeepsie, NY.

I lost the repeater in Chester, NJ ( on the way to the Sussex hamfest.

I just heard a mobile in West Trenton on Rt. 31 that sounded fine.

** Possible ISS SSTV opportunity TONIGHT **

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of ARISS there MIGHT be an opportunity to receive Slow Scan TV (SSTV) from the International Space Station (ISS) tonight. Straight over pass from 2256 to 2306 LOCAL. 145.80 MHz +/- 5khz for doppler shift (listen high :56-:00, on freq :00-03, and low :03-06). There are all sorts of SSTV decoding programs available on the web for PC and mobile devices. I know folks who have been able to decode pictures with a cell phone app "acoustically coupled" to an HT. ** Licensing Class **
The Cherryville Repeater Association, in Hunterdon County, will be holding Technician licensing classes on two consecutive weekends, August 12-13 & August 19-20. They run 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon, and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Classes are being held at the Riegel Ridge Community Center in Holland Township, NJ. There is no charge for the classes.

A testing session is offered following the class on the second Sunday (8/20 @ 3:00 PM). Exams will be available for all class levels ? Technician, General and Amateur Extra. The Exam Fee is $15. Hi all - I was able to pick up the repeater with an HT (Wuoxun) and rubber
antenna, from within my car, as far north as approximately Mile 146
(Newark/Irvington) on the Garden State Parkway recently.  Then it dropped
straight off.

I haven't had any luck using the same equipment from my QTH in Bergen
County, or nearby.  Next step is to try an outdoor antenna at home.  There
might be some other QRM up here too, at least according to the directory.

Will report any results.

I will need data from all of you. As you use the repeater, note where you
are when you begin to lose coverage ( town, road, area ).

Also note what equipment you are using. I'm most interested in Mobile
coverage using a normal 25-50 watts and external antenna.



Eventually, I'll have many points in all directions.

I lost the repeater in Chester, NJ ( on the way to the Sussex hamfest.

I just heard a mobile in West Trenton on Rt. 31 that sounded fine.

James M. Nannery, KC2ZXP passed on Saturday July 22, 2017. James W. was 85
and a resident of Edison, NJ.

Tuesday at 7:30pm. Funeral services are Wednesday July 26 starting at 9:15

ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, is calling on League members to urge their US Senators to support the Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2017, S. 1534. ARRL has opened a RallyCongress page to simplify the task.

?[W]e are at a crossroad in our efforts to obtain passage of The Amateur Radio Parity Act,? Roderick said. He said the campaign to secure passage of the bill scored a major victory earlier this year when H.R. 555 passed unanimously in the US House of Representatives. Obtaining passage of the companion Senate bill, S. 1534, is the final legislative hurdle.

?Now is the time for all hams to get involved in the process!? Roderick said. ?Many of you already live in deed-restricted communities, and that number grows daily.?

He urged radio amateurs now restricted by a Homeowners Association from installing effective outdoor antennas to visit the RallyCongress site and e-mail their two US Senators. He also encouraged those not now affected by deed covenants, conditions, and restrictions (CC&Rs) to support their fellow radio amateurs by doing the same.

?If you want to help create an opportunity - not available before now - for Amateurs who live in deed restricted communities to install effective outdoor antennas on property that you own or lease, send these e-mails today!? Roderick said. ?We need you to reach out to your Senators today.  Right away.?

S. 1534 was introduced in the US Senate on July 12, marking another step forward for this landmark legislation. Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are the Senate sponsors. The measure will, for the first time, guarantee all radio amateurs living in deed-restricted communities governed by a Homeowners Association (HOA) or subject to any private land-use regulations, the right to erect and maintain effective outdoor antennas at their homes, while protecting the aesthetic concerns of HOAs.

Minutes for the Meeting on June 30th 2017
Electronic Technology Society of New Jersey (ETS of NJ)

The Meeting was called to order by  President Vic Pennetta, K2NBC at 8:04
PM. This was followed by the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and then
by self-introductions of all those in attendance.

Meeting Minutes
Minutes for the May meeting were successfully emailed. A motion was made by
KC2YRC nd seconded by K2DSV to accept them.

Treasurer?s Report

Technical Report
The Motorola repeater constructed by WB2HKK will be installed the weekend
following the club meeting. The repeaters installed now are doing OK. The
current machine will become the primary backup repeater at the hospital.

Old Business
Picnic ? Still trying to secure dates when the park is available.
Hamfest ? Len WB2HKK donated $100 to the club. Len and Rich KB2LLM will be
going to the SCARC Hamfest in Sussex as will W2WK and W2OU.

New Business
Formal introduction of new member Chris KC2PI. In the fall, Chris will give
a presentation on data communications in Amateur Radio.

Health and Welfare
Gene K2KJI's wife is not doing well.

Presentation ? Larry W2LJ presented a powerpoint on the South Plainfield
Amateur Radio Club's Field Day.

Adjournment
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting by N2JUN and was seconded by
W2VFW. The meeting was adjourned at 9:21PM

Hey Folks --

The LIFETIME national parks pass for seniors (age 62+) is going up by 
800% (no joke!) from $10 to $80 on August 28th. It's a great deal -- you 
get substantial discounts (up to 50%) on fees to the 2000+ national 
parks, and since many of these are car fees and boat rentals, etc., 
anyone else in the vehicle (even if they are younger) also gets in. I 
know they sell these at Sandy Hook NJ, but you can probably buy them at 
Independence Hall in Philly or any other major national park. Just be 
sure to bring proof of age (current driver's license or passport should 
suffice) when you go.
