Marvin k2vhw From ARRL Hudson Div. director, N2YBB Work on HR 4969, the Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014 is ongoing. Although Congress is on vacation until September, there has been meetings with legislators and their staffs in their district offices. Some meetings have gone extremely well and I hope to pick up some more co-sponsors soon. There is much you can do as well. First, if you live in one of the following districts, you should email your Representative and say thank you for their support and for co-sponsoring HR 4969. This is extremely important. Just a simple thank you should go to: Leonard Lance (NJ-7)** Steve Israel (NY- 3) Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) Michael Grimm (NY-11) Chris Gibson (NY-19) For those of you who live in other Congressional districts, please email your Representative once again asking them to support and co-sponsor HR-4969. AND, IF YOU KNOW A CONGRESSMAN/WOMAN, OR ONE OF THEIR STAFFERS, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY SO THAT WE COULD SET SOMETHING UP TO MEET WITH THEM AND DISCUSS THE BILL!!! The extension of PRB-1 to hams living in deed restricted communities is arguably the most critical issue facing Amateur Radio today. We MUST do something now. Please help. This is what he has communicated to me in our correspondences (I like to get to know a candidate a little before they show up on testing day): I would also like to talk with you guys about possibly assisting in a High Altitude Balloon launch. Last year we launched a balloon to about 110,000 feet with cameras attached to study the atmosphere for a 3rd grade science experiment but we lacked the ability to track in real time. Based on that, I took up a new hobby launching balloons. We have upgraded our payload to include a transmitter which will broadcast on the 70cm band which is the reason why I am pursuing the license. This allows people from the area to listen in and track the balloon in flight and upload the data in real time to the tracking site. We will also be streaming photos using SSDV using RTTY. Feel free to check out the still images we capture during the first launch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el1ioztbhok and a video of the launch here.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt06tdX7Mvo I look forward to maybe speaking with you and the club more about the project. The operation will occur within the next 18 months and will be coordinated with the USFWS work flow. Over the past year, the KP1-5 Project has had numerous meetings with various levels of USFWS management. Throughout our discussions, their personnel have been courteous, professional and cooperative. We have been treated with sincere interest and respect and believe that amateur radio operators may now be viewed as partners and not adversaries. As with the Desecheo operation in 2009, and in order to be transparent and fair, the USFWS has requested proposals for the amateur radio operation from those individuals and groups that have already applied for a Special Use Permit in the past. The KP1-5 Project will be submitting a proposal and hoping to be selected as they were for the very successful Desecheo (K5D) operation. We wish to thank the USFWS for their decision to allow this operation. Navassa Island is ranked #2 most-needed DXCC entity by The DX Magazine and #1 by ClubLog. We had intriguing dialog on the prospects of putting a 70cm repeater on the air, acquisition of a new 220 mhz amplifier, possibly 2 prospective new member, reduce announcement clutter on the air, a public service event in South Plainfield and a 5K marathone in Edison, and our possible future involvement in a baloon launching project. These are all healthy activities for a viable Amateur Radio Club. I felt good when I got home and I hope the feeling is shared. Someone bought up whether there were FAA restrictions for launching weather balloons. Of course we all thought there were since we do have things like restrictive airspace, etc., however no one seemed to have a clue. My guess is the owners of the project in the spirit of due diligence would as a matter of course explored that avenue before investing in the hobby. Launching weather balloons has been a school activity since Edmund Scientific starting sending out catalogs.. There's no shortage of helpful information on the internet that only require a simple Google search. If you're too busy to do any research I will arrange to have a guest speaker address the club after he takes his Technician exam on September 13, 2014 at our new VE Exam location (Clark OEM). 73, Drew Moore W2OU, ETSNJ Director -- Ronald Loneker Sr. 908-322-6993 - From k2dsv at msn.com Sun Aug 31 06:49:41 2014 From: k2dsv at msn.com (Don WILSON) Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2014 06:49:41 -0400 Subject: [ETS/PARC List] Closeout S9 product line. All of the S9 products can be seen on our page at: http://www.cheapham.com/brands/S9.html Save on Additional LDG Closeout Products LDG YT-847 Auto tuner - MSRP $249.99 Closeout Price $99 LDG makes several dedicated tuner for several models, but that leaves a big chunk of the Yaesu product line with no dedicated tuner. Of course, most LDG tuners will work just fine with Yaesu radios, but it sure would be nice to have it integrated to the radio. LDGs YT-847 is just that. An included CAT/Power cable interfaces with your FT-847. This makes it an integrated tuner powered by the interface. No extra power cables are needed. Just press the tune button on the tuner and everything else happens automatically! The mode is set to carrier and the RF power is reduced, a tune cycle runs and the radio is returned to the original settings. The LDG YT-847 is shown on our page at: http://www.cheapham.com/ldg-yt-847-closeout/ LDG ALK-2 Audio Linear Key Switch - MSRP $49.99 Closeout Price $35 As a ham back in the 50s, it never entered anyone's mind that they would ever own more than one radio. I mean, having a DX-20 paired with an AR-2 was just about as much as anyone could imagine. Now, it's not unusual to have two HF transceivers, or maybe an HF transceiver and a VHF/UHF set. Each one of these might have a separate speaker, or need a keying line. Switching a single speaker or keyer between the two involves so much plugging and unplugging you start to look like Ernestine the telephone switchboard girl. LDG has the solution. The ALK-2 is a switch box for speakers, keying lines, ALC lines or whatever you need. It has two switched and one common set of jacks in the back: 1/8th inch stereo and RCA jacks in parallel. On the front, a push-in/push-out selects the port, and an LED lights to indicate the selection. For instance, you can switch one speaker between two radios, or two radios between one speaker. Drew Moore" HI Drew. ?Thanks for this. ?With regards to the FAA - The requirements are covered under FAR Part 101. ?Being a licensed Private Pilot I am familiar with these regulations. ?In a nutshell, I cannot launch within 5 miles of an Airport without the authorization of the airport manager. ?In addition, I must stay out of Class B and C airspace. ?Examples of Class B and C are JFK/Newark (Class B) and Trenton (Class C). ?A few other rules apply which I can explain in more detail at one of your meetings. I am at the mercy of the winds aloft and the Jet stream and have forecast models which allow me to estimate the balloon in flight and and the payload recovery location within about 10 miles or so. ?My launch location is determined based on the winds aloft. ?Our first launch was near Hershey PA and the payload traveled over 125 miles to Boonton NJ. ? There are many details which go into a launch and i'm more than happy to come down to your next meeting and explain the project from beginning to end. I am really excited that you are discussing this. ?This certainly would take this project to the next level. Speak with you soon. Regards, Mike On Sat, Aug 30, 2014 at 10:48 PM, E.
