I am sorta thinking the market signs are pretty good this year.
Just think... a really lousy economy, but lots of new offerings
this year from several of companies... this speaks well of the
ham market, in general. Companies are trying new stuff, not
quitting.
* Palstar announces a new auto tuner (due in a few months)
* former Palstar auto tuner being revamped with a remote
head and fiber optic cable control (due in a few months)
* Command Technologies is under new management (again)
indicating that is a viable player - someone wants to develop
the line ! That is another indicator of overall market health.
* Alinco announces new HF receiver (big news for SWLs)
Not so big a deal for hams, but the SW world can use a shot
in the arm and a vote of confidence from a major mfr. other
than Eton/Grundig and a couple of Chinese players (e.g., Degen,
Kaito, Redsun, etc.) I don't know if it is a good receiver for
the money, but a new rig in a stagnant market segment is
good news - at least THEY think it is still a viable segment.
* Alinco new HF transceiver - good to see they think the
market will sustain a new entry level rig. But, I was totally
disappointed in the Alinco transceiver recently announced,
which I think will prove a marketing dud. Lots of compromises
that many guys won't like. Keeping cost down is OK, but some
of the trade-offs were, in my view, poor choices to make.
Nevertheless, a new offering is an indicator they think the
market will support a new product.
* At least two new Icom rigs (IC-9100 and IC-7410)
updates of prior rigs, but still that is a sign Icom is
thinking the market is good enough to make changes for
* Yaesu revamps (a little) the FT-450 - see comment on Icom and Alinco
* Elecraft has a totally new rig for low power and portable use
-- not that I care, but there are LOTS of hams who might
like this sort of rig. THAT shows well for the marketability
of new ham gear.
* TT has the Eagle -- not totally new but first time at Dayton
-- I bet it went over well at Dayton... I think there is a market
for a simple rig with good performance at a moderate price.
I will probably for the next big box from TT... but I am talking
about the viability of the ham market here ... this is a good
rig for the ham business in general. Good sales will help TT
and prove the market is overall healthy and viable.
* Kenwood has new TX-950 - also not totally new but first time at Dayton
I am a TT guy, but good to see Kenwood is alive and trying
to stay in the game - and that is good for the overall ham world
This is selling well... maybe Kenwood will come out next with
a killer big box rig (rather than update its entry level offering)
and really heat things up... (that is what I hope.)
* Yaesu hits top of the Sherwood chart with its FT-5000 -- not a totally
new rig, but it is news for it to hit the top of the chart -
proving Yaesu
is in the game for real (and even though I am a TT guy... it is
good for
everyone that the market is vibrant and healthy...)
* HTs are pretty well settled in what they are ... but I believe there
are a couple of new HTs in the market place... again good signs
of a healthy market.
Anyway, that is MY take...
Your mileage will certainly vary depending on your needs
and operating style.

Happy Trails.
