Hi Martin,
I don't feel there is any more or any less of a concern than any other
type of equipment dependent on a computer. I'm sure we are all aware that
in this technological age computers are a part of everyone's lives whether
they own one or not. We all know that at times computers fail.
In the event of a computer failure we need to eventually make sure
that down time is kept to a minimum. With that, a 2nd computer has already
been allocated as a backup (thanks to K2KGG). That 2nd computer would already
be programmed with the Asterisk software and ready to be swapped out.
The URI interfaces (1 per repeater) are programmed with all the
specific control parameters for our repeaters. Interfacing the URI's is a matter
of just connecting the cables. It has been talked about at the meeting
already that a 3rd URI would eventually be purchased as a back-up. For full
redundancy we could purchase a 4th URI at a later time.
I think what is stated above is a good start to reducing "down time"
in the event of a computer failure.
As for the operating system and software itself, Linux has been a
proven and reliable operating system (more so than windows from what I
understand) and Asterisk is also a stable and proven phone PBX software with a full
backing of support. As a matter of fact, some large companies are using
the "free" open source Asterisk software for their phone systems, such as
Electric Utility Southern Co, and American Fiber Systems (remember- Asterisk
was designed as a phone PBX control software and later "tweaked" for use
with Amateur Radio). Plus there are many Phone PBX System Supplier/Installer
companies using only Asterisk as their PBX software.
The repeater linking capabilities are dependent on an Internet
connection. Which in turn is dependent on an outside Internet Service Provider
(i.e.: Verizon DSL). Should there be a computer failure or Internet Service
disruption there is still RF.

Any concerns about the reliability of the system, considering the
dependency on a "computer" ?

Subject: [ETS/PARC List] Implementing the Asterisk Controller Sys.

Hi Everyone,
After last nights ETS meeting and discussion I'm sure many of you, as
I am, are very excited about implementing the Asterisk rpt controller to
our clubs repeaters. A few of you expressed interest in being part the
committee to implement this upgrade. As stated last night, Rich-KB2LLM
will be
spearheading the project. Those of you interested please email me your
Name,
Callsign and direct email address.
As simple as the Asterisk system can be to interface and operate,
there can be some intricate tasks and procedures needed to be done to
complete
the project. I feel it would be beneficial for all those involved in the
project to be in contact with each other so everyone knows what tasks are
being done or not done. This would be helpful in seeing that the Asterisk
system is interfaced smoothly and seamlessly with minimal disruption to
the
current repeater operation.

Thanks you all,
73
Gene
