I'm guessing the memory requires an internal battery of some kind? Just can?t take a chance of a battery leaking or something inside the radio. -Kyp W5KYP > On Nov 4, 2020, at 09:34, Bill S via ElecraftKX3 wrote: > > ? > > ______________________________________________________________ > ElecraftKX3 mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraftkx3 > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:ElecraftKX3 at mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html From kc6zkt at effable.com Wed Nov 4 10:44:30 2020 From: kc6zkt at effable.com (Steve KC6ZKT) Date: Wed, 4 Nov 2020 07:44:30 -0800 Subject: [ElecraftKX3] KX3 - what batteries to use In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <8ef56930-0064-849d-0b9b-30063c4b2740@effable.com> The short answer is, the best you can afford. In my experience, the non-volatile memory will stay up at least 6 months without power being applied. My choice for batteries in the my KX3 is the Panasonic Eneloop Pro NiMH [ https://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/battery/eneloop/lineup.html ]. The KX3 is my favorite of my HF radios right now. In the long run, though, I wish that Elecraft would offer another option. I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery into the field when I use this radio, an external charge controller, and solar panel. It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a big project to improve this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real estate to include a lithium battery charger, and even a solar charge controller in its space. The amount of battery energy that could fit in-place of the NiMH cells could approximately triple the capacity of the AA cells. So I have these questions: 1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery pack? 2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?
