[Elecraft] KX3 with external speaker

I have had my KX3 for many many years but until today I never hooked it up to an external speaker.  I almost always only worked portable or used the internal speaker or headphones.

I have an Elecraft SP3 speaker and the sound level is very low.  I have heard before (a number of years ago) that the audio amp on the KX3 is not that powerful but I would think it should be effective  with the SP3.

Am I missing something or do I need powered speakers or maybe slip in a small audio amp between KX3 and the SP3.

Can someone give pointers on this?
