When you press the MODE button on the left, does it cycle through
AUTO/MAN/BYP?
If you leave it on AUTO or MAN and power-cycle the unit, does it power
up in the same mode?
BTW, you should almost always use the KAT500 in the MAN mode because
AUTO initiates a tuning sequence every time it detects RF.
First you should "train" the KAT by stepping through all the bands of
interest at the Elecraft-recommended frequency intervals and giving it
10-20 watts of RF, so it will remember the settings, and automatically
energize the relays accordingly, so the antenna is tuned immediately for
every QSY.
I train my KAT in the MAN mode, then tapping the TUNE button each time I
transmit the 10-20 watts, but you can use the AUTO mode for training if
you wish.
