My guess is that a lot of those folks fall into the category of
collectors ... countries, states, grids, counties, etc. It's not much
difference at all than for most DX chasers ... quick report and that's
it, except that FT8 provides its own list of stations that HE can hear
as opposed to what somebody else heard and posted to a cluster.
Others, like the guy who posted here just a bit ago, use it for
propagation purposes (like with PSK Reporter) or maybe just to see how
far they can work with modest gear and antennas. FT8 at least gives
sort of standard signal reports.
And let's face it ... a lot of ham radio QSOs are exceedingly boring.
Signal report, name, rig, QTH, and the weather. They are as canned as
an FT8 exchange.
