Does the radio still work?? If I find loose parts but the radio still
works, I consider them to be spare parts. ?? Seriously, does it appear
to be electronic in nature ... i.e. does it have terminals or solder
points?

My totally uneducated guess is that it?s a surface mount capacitor. I did
an image search and found what resembles you have. That?s all I can offer.
Good luck.

Actually with a marking like 3K3, it's likely a 3.3K ohms surface mount
resistor.
Possibly from a poor soldering job on the main board. It likely passed
electrical
tests, but after some mechanical torque, it likely popped off of the board.

BTW, the item that was banging around in my K3s sometime after I built it
was a nut with a broken piece of screw in it.
I obviously over torqued it at some point, and it eventually fell off.

No telling where THAT came from...

Thought I'd follow up on the list with the information I received from the
mailman.qth.net support:

Hi Dave. ARRL has published something called an 'SPF record' which
specifies what SMTP servers are allowed to use arrl.net as a FROM address.
This effectively stops the ability for anyone to send out emails using @
arrl.net as their FROM address. You can receive mail, but you can no
longer send out email using that as your email address. You will want to
quickly change your email program so it no longer uses @arrl.net as your
FROM address, as servers worldwide will stop receiving those emails (they
will either reject them, or simply discard them, or put them in a spam
folder -- either way, your emails aren't going to get through to most folks)

While this was ARRL's decision, it is the correct one. GMail has stopped
taking mail from any domain that has no SPF record, so ARRL was forced into
this. And, by the way, the ARRL never promoted or even said you could use @
arrl.net as your FROM address. It has always been marketed as a free email
forwarding service.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is what it is. Nobody can fix
this. Stop using @arrl.net as your FROM address as soon as possible.

You will need to send a picture so that people can determine what it is.

I took the K3 schematics (since you didn't mention K3s) and did a search
for 3.3 ohms and 3.3 kohms but that didn't give a hit, suggesting it may
not be a resistor. There are 3 3.3uf capacitors in the radio.

Once we've established what it is we can search further.

I thought it would be a 3.3 ohm resistor that would run hot, un-solder
itself but as said, can't find a schematic that has it.

Note that many email clients can be configured with a custom "reply-to"
address - using your @arrl.net address there is still fair game, and will
cause "reply" function to send it to you @arrl.net.

It also won?t forward if the from address is the same as it is supposed to
forward to; so use a second account for testing.

OK, I've now changed my email address to come from my actual domain.
Let's see how this works.

I've built a fair number of kits using surface mount parts, and it always
annoyed me that capacitors were never marked, while resistors were. I
never heard an explanation of why that was.

I just used my ISP and created a domain with my call sign. They take care
of all the crap and I get a custom domain. :). Cost is trivial. I forget
what it is though.

My custom domain is densbe.com (my initials followed by the last 3
letters of my callsign).

Owned it since 1995, when domain registration was free via the InterNIC.

Boy, those were the days....

That?s why I used a .us domain rather than the more common TLDs. I think I
was charged the princely sum of $25/year for the .us TLD. :) Cheap at twice
the price.

Dave,

You should _never_ key the K3s at 5w (or 50w)!? It can disrupt the TX
GAIN settings and create huge power spikes, which can be a real problem
if you use an amplifier.? Just use 6w or 4w or 5.5w, etc.? You can
confirm this with Elecraft, who will tell you the same thing.?? Check
previous threads; it has been discussed before.? 73, Jim W6YA

ARRL implemented new computer system that changed some usernames (mine
included) form their call sign to their email address. That results in the
ARRL email redirector rejecting the mailto address. Call ARRL and get them
involved. Their IT department had to fix mine. All well now.

How would one search the archives for this info?

Is this only the K3S, or does it also include K3? How about a K3/10?

And you're saying one should never transmit with the transmitter set to 5W
(or 50W)?

I do drive an Alpha 8410 with my K3/10 - and I've probably done so at 5W
out of the K3/10, although normally I'm using 12W.

I would appreciate a link to something that indicates this is a bad thing
to do.

Lee, just try searching with keywords, such as TX GAIN, K3 power spikes,
TX GAIN Calibration, etc. etc.? The best thing you can do, if you're not
convinced transmitting at 5 or 50w is a risk, is ask Elecraft.? K6XX,
who designed the KPA1500, was the first to tell me about this.? Keith,
who services the K3 and K3s, confirmed it multiple times on this
reflector.? Ask someone at Elecraft.??? 73,Jim

Searching what? The only archives I see are listed by month, with no place
to enter a search - that's my search issue!

I?d like clarification on this also. I don?t run an amp but I?ve run my K3
for years at 5 watts for QRP events without issue. My TUN PWR is set to 7
watts to keep my remote tuner and LPA happy.

The manual states that to manually initiate a TX GAIN calibration to set TUN
PWR to exactly 5 (or 50) watts and hold the TUNE button. I can imagine that
accidentally doing so into an antenna rather than a 50 Ohm dummy load could
really mess up the TX GAIN calibration.

Thoughts?
