[Elecraft] Mag loops and KX3 tuning

Do not use the KX3 tuner when using a mag loop. Set the tuner to bypass.
A mag loop is the tuner. In order to gain resonance, adjust the mag loop's
capacitor to hear maximum noise at the frequency you want to start working.
Mag loops are high Q, resonant in a very narrow range of frequencies. That
said, once it's resonant, tune around or use the PX3 to see other stations.
However, before transmitting, repeat the tune for noise procedure. Also, if
you shift receive frequency in the band, you will find that the capacitor
needs to move just the very smallest amount to gain resonance, as indicated
by highest noise.
You will find the "tune for noise" procedure in any mag loop manual.
I have reached eastern Europe from eastern Massachusetts with a KX3 and an
Alex loop, while indoors in a wood frame building.
If you use a conventional antenna tuner, such as the one in the KX3 with a
mag loop, it just won't work.

I have had similar problems a couple of times over the years and it was
the coax connectors on the synthesizer board.? Simply unplugging them
and re-installing them fixed the problem.? However, the last time I also
put a small amount of Deoxit on the connector.

CW = continuous wave, an unmodulated carrier
CW <> Morse code, although many take it to mean that these days. One
doesn't "learn CW", one "learns Morse code".
Do you have a watt meter between the KX3 and the loop?

You are correct, it puts out a plain carrier, CW with the key held down.

Yes; "CONTINUOUS wave."
It's not really an unmodulated "FM" signal; it's an unmodulated carrier.
There's no reason to assign an arbitrary modulation designation -- why
not say it's an unmodulated FSK or PSK signal?

Karl,
We usually do have a pre-net call up, sometimes as much as 15 minutes
early, and several of the stations last night were running 'barefoot'
(100W), some into EFHW wire antennas, so please don't despair. Since I
was having antenna issues last night, I ended up running barefoot
myself, and most stations could still hear me. I'm using an inverted Vee
configuration of a ZS6BKW dipole which is fed with window line and coax,
and tuned at the far end by the tuner in my K3s (or KAT500 when running
the KPA500).
We also have a couple or more stations that are looking out for stations
to relay into the net, one of which is in northern GA, so he should be
able to hear you.
Please give us another try next Sunday, and we'll try extra hard to
listen up for weak signals. The band was pretty quiet last night, and
if that keeps up, we should be successful.
See you next week,

Let's get our nomenclature right ...
CW never means Morse Code. It means continuous wave or carrier wave (used
interchangeably).
Morse-type Code occurs only when a continuous wave is turned on and off to
represent letters, numbers, and punctuation according to a given language's
agreed upon chart of correlation.
CW is a mode of transmission. Morse Code is an application using that mode.

Kent,
You're technically correct, but for the 67 years I've been a ham, "CW"
has meant Morse code on the ham bands. This has, indeed, led to
misunderstandings about the bandwidth of Morse transmission. A constant
carrier has near zero bandwidth. Morse transmission occupies hundreds of
Hz in a GOOD transmitter.
And Morse operation on the ham bands is 100% amplitude modulation of a
carrier by a train of rectangular waves, which in poorly designed rigs
produces intermodulation distortion in the RF signal chain, sidebands
that are heard as key clicks. In general, the strength of sidebands is
proportional to the speed of the transitions from on to off and off to
on -- the faster the transition, the stronger the clicks. One of the
many virtues of Elecraft rigs beginning with the original K3 is that
these transitions are carefully shaped to minimize clicks while
maximizing readability.

A ham asked a simple question about the TUN function and got a bunch of
criticism about terminology. There was only one post (mine) that actually
answered his question helpfully. That is not a good look for this list.
Let?s try to be Elmers and dial back the negative stuff.

Please disregard my post as I have "re-found" the answer.
Long story short...I started this activity some six months ago and had to
stop for personal reasons.
I had simply forgotten that Ray K2ULR had provided the answer back then.
When I realized it, I tried to stop my post but Keith WE6R emailed me that
there is no way to do that.
Apologies for taking up the bandwidth.

I'm glad you thought of it! It must have taken a while to get from
concept to production. I would imagine that it's not that simple to add
other data modes -- the foundation is there but my guess is that it
would require more code crunching?
Thanks for all.

Hi Tony,
I had the function in mind, then cajoled Lyle into doing the hard part --
the demodulator. Somehow he figured it out in just a few days.
The key idea that led to the PSK31 and RTTY decoders was this: that a ham
receiver should be able to demodulate all commonly heard signals and display
them on the front panel, without resorting to a computer. That was around
2005, though. Since that time many new data modes have been added that made
this less practical, but RTTY and PSK31 are still in widespread use (you can
hear them every day) and operating in these modes using the radio itself is
still compelling for many of us.

When I got my K3, one of the first produced, I made a couple of RTTY and
PSK contacts with the CW-to-digital feature, virtually my first non-CW
QSOs since the 1980s. I think they wondered why I sent them 5NN reports,
though.
