Dennis,

Maybe look back at build instructions. As I recall from 2008 (pretty 
faintly by now), the encoders are mounted to the front panel, which was 
separately assembled and fitted to the main chassis with a couple of 
multipin connectors that are tricky to line up but not tricky to remove.
