Thanks for the references. 
Some of the elements from the harmonica place are interesting, but expensive.  A good source, if they are OK. 
Emboldened by  D-104 Element Repair - Mike Harrison (smugmug.com) I tore into one and found the diaphragm glue gone and the linkage between the diaphragm and element loose on both ends. 
The repair is easy and preliminary indications are it's working OK. 
I don't know if it's a crystal or ceramic element, but it's hot, so I expect ceramic. 
I'd bet quite a few cartridges have been replaced because of these problems!
