I have had several 2m radios (HT's and mobiles).

to be equivalent to a 706 you are looking for an all-mode (usually 
mobile or desk model).  I have had the IC-211 (pretty much obsolete, now 
days), FT-847, FT-736R, and my K3 + DEMI transverters.

The K3+DEMI is pretty much dedicated to eme use so I recently bought a 
IC-9700 to replace the aged FT-736R.  I love it for SSB or FM usage. But 
its not cheap ($1500 range).  But you do not need amplifiers with it.
